Eston Ray Sutton
Class of 1955
Air Force, 20+ Years

I joined the Air Force in 1955 and enjoyed a 20-year career. I spent five years as an enlisted man and then had the opportunity to go to Officer Candidate School. I was fortunate to retire a Major as I was a reserve officer due to the fact that I could not pass the physical for a regular commission.

As an officer, my Air Force career began at Lackland AFB in San Antonio where I was Administrative Officer in Basic Training. Then after three years was moved to Shreveport, LA as a Psychological Testing Officer at the recruiting station. When leaving Louisiana I was privileged to go to Squadron Officers School and from there was assigned to the base in Amarillo, Texas. Due to an outbreak of meningitis at Lackland AFB, we established a Basic Training Group in Amarillo. I was “honored” to command the first Basic Training Squadron. Shortly after that I was accepted for a Security Service assignment and was sent to Hof Air Station in Germany as the Chief Base Personnel Officer. After that tour of duty, it was back to San Antonio and Kelly AFB where I was Chief of Career Progression Division. My next move took me to Thailand (during the Vietnam era) where we reactivated Takli Air Base for the F-111. What an experience! (While serving there he was awarded the Bronze Star.) Then back to Kelly as Chief of Officer Assignments for the command. Then my 20-years were up and I was forced to retire.

(This I just a portion of what Eston wrote for his 50th high school reunion. He passed away April 20, 2008. I added the Bronze Star as he would not include it.) Kathryn M. Sutton
