John S. Foret
Class of 1969
Air Force, 4 Years
Joined USAF April 1970 and received an early out December 1973. Served as a Security Police Officer LE (Law Enforcement). Took Basic Training at Lackland AFB, San Antonio, TX. Direct Duty assignment to Andrews AFB Silver Springs, MD May of 1970. I was then transferred in November 1970 to Wiesbaden AFB Germany. Attained the rank of Sergeant. Rotated back to the states in October 1973 to Minot AFB, ND (in the winter, what a treat!) There is an old USAF adage for Minot "There is a girl behind every tree, but you must find the tree". This is the only true security work I performed in the AF, I was assigned to Missiles and was what was call a SAT (Security Alert Team)Team Leader. All previous work assignments were truly Law Enforcement. While in Germany it was truly like a Sheriffs Dept. as we also had off base housing patrolling responsibility and worked very closely with the German Polizie when patrolling GI hot spots in the city of Wiesbaden and surrounding small towns. . I received a 120 day early out, as the service number were winding down from Vietnam. My time in the service still resonates with me today. I know the re institution of a draft would never be received well in this day and age, but there is a lot to be said for compulsory service on behalf of your country. (i.e. Military, Peace Corp, VISTA, , hell even serving in underprivileged areas of the US. We all have a stake in our countries future! (enough pontificating)
