Favorite School Memory I won the school-wide history contest, on the stage, in my junior year. The same day, my dog died of old age.
About Me Back in high school I was a whiz kid… I made notes before each test…I did. Now, I win first prize because I became wise to the ways of my ego and id. I went off to college like putty to help shape my mind, which was muddy. Unbeknownst to me, my gal, Valerie, went and married my bowling buddy. In fifty-nine I matriculated. I used a slide rule and calculated. I found three study nooks… and filled up those blue books… In sixty-three…I graduated. Law school scares, works and bores you to death. Next? …Bar exam…STOP…Then catch your breath. Hang out your shingle. Mingle while single. Just say “NO” to grass, crack and meth. Bubba was subpoenaed in the halls, shopping malls and in rest room stalls. Add the prefix “sub” to the “root” word, Bub… get it? They have got you by your balls. T’is said that “The truth shall set you free” but posting bail should be your “Plan B”. Bail gets you out of jail and it will rarely fail, unless...you’re charged for a killing spree. The art of cross-examination is designed to get information from a hostile witness of the moral fitness to distinguish truth from fiction. Following a daring bank hold-up, the bad guys headed north…and holed up. Donuts delayed the cops, because they made two stops. A month later, the robbers split up. My lawyer made more than me. How? With a contingency fee. It’s in the fine print, how she earns a mint. I call that fee, “legal larceny.” March twenty-nine, nineteen seventy nine. Three Mile Island’s nuke plant went off line. “China Syndrome” occurred. Common sense was blurred… and no one said “False alarm…all’s fine”. I’m consistently inconsistent; at being random…I’m persistent… I’m unpredictable… and unreliable... and I’m conformity resistant. Procrastinators love a deadline; the last minute is my main lifeline. Putting things off is fun but nothing will get done, if somewhere, there is a jug…of wine. I’m seventy-four…ain’t that scary? My income comes from the tooth fairy. I have lost my soul in the doughnut hole… I feel like a coal mine canary. "You are anatomically intact" the doctor said "and that is a fact. It comes from your CAT scan... and you must understand... your fall was not another heart attack.” I had balancing issues last year. With my checkbook? No, my inner ear. I began PT and began to see with stronger muscles…I’ve less to fear. Up my rectum to my appendix, the doctors promised a painless fix. Up colonoscope… down goes all my hope, but for a new topic for limericks. I'm asking that this lim-rick be read somewhere, sometime, after I am dead. Some might recognize it… as from this town poet... who died with limericks still in his head! Is this autobiographical? No, it can’t be…it is too awful. So, I will call it fiction and side-step the friction by saying it’s “apocryphal.” I’ve been told I’m quirky and cuckoo… a message that comes from “you-know-who”. Yes, I like to compose lim-ricks rather than prose… ...(read more)
