Air Force, 20+ Years
I was originally an administrator (I flew a desk). The first four years had a lot of physical labor, but as computer came more into common usage, my job turned more into using, setting up and fixing computers. I ended up working on an Air Force network for six years before returning to more of an administrator/supervisor role. That gave me the opportunity to go to Afghanistan and work for a couple of great generals. Other locations I got to see and spend some time in were Turkey, Egypt, Spain, and Germany. I also had additional duties, my war-time skill was Disaster Preparedness (DP), the people who work in and teach other to work in chemical and radiation suits in potentially dangerous and deadly environments. After the Challenger disaster, all those assigned to DP learned how to evacuate the Space Shuttle, in case they had to make an emergency landing. The Air Force tried sending me to the Pentagon for my last assignment, two times! The first was cancelled, however, would have been a great experience (by the time I would have gotten the appropriate clearance, I would have been retired). The second, I turned down since all my immediate family was in Florida (daughters, son, grand-daughter, sister, brothers). I retired in '06 after over 23 years of service (yeah, I waited until I was 26 before I joined).
