About | Earl Dawes Eddy III left the morning of May 30th for his 50th summit of Mt. Rainier. Reported missing on June 1st, Dawes's body was found and recovered June 6th after an extensive search and rescue effort. The family will be forever grateful to all who joined in the search and recovery, and to all who supported them during that time. Dawes is survived by his wife of 41 years, Mary Kay Eddy, siblings Joann (Rick) Davis and Steven John (Michael Antonette) Eddy, daughters Kelley Ann (Gordon) LeBar, Lesley Ann (Scott) Carney, Erin Bridgid Shea, and Shannon Anne Shea, and seven grandchildren: Tucker Egan, Molly Kathryn, and Liam Jack Bissell; Nicholas Dawes, Heather Ann, and Holley Jean LeBar; and Elise Lucielle Carney. Born to Carol Elizabeth and Earl Dawes Eddy, Jr. on January 26th, 1943, in Spokane, WA, Dawes graduated from Lewis and Clark High School, and earned a B.A. from Washington State University in 1964. He started his working career with Dun and Bradstreet. Then, during the 1974 World's Fair Expo, he built, owned, and operated a river boat tour. Subsequently, he chose a career in asphalt maintenance until his retirement. Dawes's early years were spent hunting, fishing, and camping with family and friends. His passion for living an active life was felt by all who knew him. He was an accomplished athlete even before his passion for climbing, running all but a few Bloomsday races, and taking first in his age group on occasion. Throughout his life Dawes enjoyed many forms of skiing, from kicking out rooster tails on Lake Pend Oreille, to careening downhill on groomed slopes. After his retirement he took up randonee skiing, going both up and down under his own power. Since January, he took delight in the free lift tickets he received after reaching 80 years of age. Dawes always challenged himself and others to get outside and appreciate all that nature had to offer. Every day – no matter the weather - was a "beautiful day." For him, every moment held a possible adventure from simple daily walks, to hiking on Wednesdays with a group of friends - "Bill's Bunch of Hikers" - and out into the wilderness on his own. He discovered his passion for mountain climbing in 1984 after a visit to Mt. Rainier's Sunrise area. In 1985, Dawes and Mary Kay summited Mt. Rainier together for the first time. Dawes returned innumerable times to explore and climb this beloved mountain. Over the years, he climbed five of the Seven Summits including the summit of Everest in 2009 at age 66. Revelling in a challenge, he pursued a rigorous exercise routine and completed the Grand Canyon R2R2R (rim-to-rim-to-rim) ten times, most recently in April of this year. The family will hold a celebration of Dawes's life later; loved ones will be notified in the future when a service is scheduled. Published by Spokesman-Review from Jul. 19 to Jul. 23, 2023. |
