About | CLARKE, William H. "Bill" Born November 29th 1942, son of Harvey and Harriet Clarke, passed away on September 19th with family at his side. Bill grew up in Spokane and graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in 1961. He obtained a Bachelor's degree from Washington State University in 1966 and a law degree from the University of Washington in 1969. He served as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Washington from 1969-1975, acting as Chief of the State's Consumer Protection and Antitrust Division and later Chief of the Special Trial Division. He also served for two years in the United States Senate as a legislative aide to Senator Slade Gorton. But, ultimately, Bill's greatest passion was education. He taught at Gonzaga Law School from 1975 to 2005 and acted as Associate Dean from 1991 to 1997. He also loved coaching Gonzaga's Moot Court team, and under his leadership the team had a run of eight straight trips to nationals in New York. Bill also served as a guest professor in Split, Croatia and was a three-time recipient of the "most distinguished teacher" award given by the Student Bar Association. Bill spent six years as a Trustee of Saint George's School, including two years as Board President. Bill was a man of many diverse interests. He enjoyed hiking, fishing, photography, and running. He was a diehard northwest sports fan particularly when it came to his children. He attended every event his kids participated in, and was never shy with his passionate support. He loved live music and loved to collect music. He was also an avid reader and had an impressive inquisitiveness and depth of knowledge on a number of subjects, particularly the history of the West. Most of all, Bill enjoyed sharing his interest in music, books, and history with his friends and family. We all miss and love him dearly. Bill is survived by his fiancee, Lani McFarlane of Spokane, three children, Benjamin Clarke of New Haven, CT, Daniel Clarke of Queens, NY, and Samantha Condiotty of Newcastle, WA, and his first grand- child, Casey Condiotty, born two days after Bill's death. Also surviving are his three siblings and their spouses, Janet and Paul Mann of Spokane, Ric and Mary Clarke of Mullan, ID, and Don and Sue Clarke of Sacramento, CA, and Bill's former spouse, Joan Clarke of Spokane Valley. A celebration of Bill's life is being planned for December 18th at 2:00PM Gonzaga Law School, Barbieri Court Room. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Gonzaga Law School or Saint George's School. Published by Spokesman-Review from Dec. 11 to Dec. 12, 2011. |
