About FREY, Kerry
On his birthday December 17 2020, Arthur "Kerry" Frey was released from a long journey with Alzheimer's disease to be in the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, his sweet spirit and loving attitude prevailing until his last breath. Kerry was a man of integrity, compassion and tenderness, enriching the lives of the people he knew. He lived a life of service with great humility, strength and unrelenting passion; he literally and figuratively dedicated his hands and heart to his work. As a beloved husband of 53 years, Kerry cherished his wife Val (Little) Frey, and was a dedicated family man. He was a loving father and role model to his three daughters Neicy Frey, Julia Bytnar and Mary Hawk, and was attentive to his 6 grandchildren as well as his nieces and nephews, modeling integrity, kindness, and service to the greater good. As a colleague, Kerry was always a team player and gave himself wholeheartedly to the group mission. He was a faithful friend and mentor to many. Kerry committed his days to loving God and passing God's love to others through prayer, words and service. Kerry was an exceptional athlete and enjoyed many recreational sports throughout his adult life, playing racquetball, squash, golf, softball, and downhill and cross-country skiing. Kerry loved camping and set up tents at round lake in Idaho as well as the hills in South India where he enjoyed fishing, hiking and swimming with the family. Kerry was often found shooting hoops with the grandkids, nieces and nephews in the back yard or watching a Zags or Seahawks game on TV. Kerry had a pleasant personality; he could be both serious and light-hearted, and was just as ready for a deep intellectual or philosophical conversation as he was to tell a corny joke. He loved hunting for antiques to refinish and spent many hours tinkering away in his workshop. Kerry was an avid reader, his favorite book being the Bible. In his later years, neighborhood walks every evening with Val completed their day. Kerry attended Wilson grade school where his mother Thora Frey was the school secretary. He went on to Lewis and Clark High School, where his father Art Frey was a coach and history teacher. Kerry was voted "friendliest boy" his freshman year; as a sophomore, junior and senior Kerry lettered in Football, Basketball, Baseball and Track, and was a student body officer. He graduated in 1960, receiving the Tom True award for all-around achievement, and was also awarded LCHS "outstanding boy athlete". Kerry attended the University of Washington where he lived at the Phi Delta Theta fraternity and played on the UW baseball team. He received his BS at Eastern Washington University in Physical Education, and then his Physical Therapy degree from Children's Hospital in Hollywood CA. Kerry was married to Valerie in 1967. The couple lived inCA and Europe before having children. Back in Spokane, Kerry worked as Head Athletic Trainer at Eastern Washington University for 5 years, and then became the Director of Physical Therapy Education Development for 3 years, laying the groundwork for the PT school at EWU. During this time at Eastern Kerry received his Masters' degree in Health Sciences. In 1976, Kerry and Val attended the Fuller Seminary in Pasadena CA in preparation for their international mission work. The Frey family moved to South India in 1978, where Kerry and Val worked at CMCH (Christian Medical College and Hospital) in Vellore, under assignment of the American Baptist International Ministries. Kerry served as Director of the Physio Therapy school for 7 years. He also worked as a PT clinician, and in student ministries on the college campus. During this time Kerry developed orthopedic footwear for people with leprosy with Dr. Paul Brand. The Freys continued their international ministry with the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, where they served as dorm parents for 4 years at the missionary boarding school Dalat International School in Penang, Malaysia. Upon returning to the USA, Kerry finished his Doctorate degree in Educational Leadership at Gonzaga University. He worked as Director of Physical Therapy at Touchmark retirement community and also worked as a clinician with Providence Visiting Nurses Association in Spokane until his retirement. The last 3 years of his life Kerry lived at North Central Care Center where the staff provided exceptionally loving and attentive care. Kerry is preceded in death by his parents Art and ThoraFrey, and survived by his daughters: Neicy Frey and children Elie and Boaz; Julia Bytnar and husband Brad Bytnar and children Zachary and Georgia; Mary Hawk and children Levi and Lyric;Kerry's sister Gretchen Horne and her children; and in-law family John and Liz Little and Paul and Deneice Hastings and their children. Kerry spread the fragrant aroma of Christ wherever his feet trod. As a good and faithful servant of the Lord, he completed his mission here on earth, a job fantastically done. A public memorial will be held in Summer 2021. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Kerry's name to: Youth For Christ, Spokane WA Christian Medical College & Hospital, Vellore S.
