About	HOGSETT, Smith F. M.D. (Age 74) Smitty, died from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident on May 16, 2017 in Boquete, Panama. He was born on October 12, 1942 in Philadelphia, PA to S. Fuller and Roberta Hogsett. Smitty grew up in Spokane, attending Roosevelt GS and graduated from Lewis and Clark HS in 1960. He attended undergraduate and Medical School at the University of Washington. Smitty did his Ophthalmology residency at the Scheie Eye Institute, U of Penn in Philadelphia from 1969-1971. During this time, he served in the US Army Reserve. In 1974 he joined his father, S. Fuller Hogsett's Ophthalmology practice in the Spokane Medical Center Building. Smitty started the Empire Eye Physicians Clinic near Valley General Hospital in 1989, specializing in cataract surgery. He performed nearly 16K cataract surgeries in his 38-year career. Smitty retired from his medical practice in 2005 and built a home for himself and wife Lisa in Boquete, Panama. He loved the incredible tropical beauty of Boquete, the wonderful native peoples and the slower pace. He became an orchid enthusiast, cultivating 300 different varieties and raised a rescued Tropical Screech owl, "Sabio" (Wise). Smitty was always a student. He loved reading and quickly picked up Spanish from talking to the native people. Smitty loved adventure and he had passions. He enjoyed helicopter skiing and mountaineering. He was an avid paraglider and the sport took him to places like New Zealand and Chile. His passion for motorcycles started while on a summer journey around Europe with friends during college. He recently made two motorcycle trips across the USA, one with son, Mitchell. He loved riding motorcycles in the mountains near Boquete with his Panamanian buddies. Smitty was a passionate Gonzaga Bulldog, UW Husky and Seattle Seahawks fan. He searched out a satellite feed so he could watch the games in real time. Smitty is survived by his wife Lisa of Boquete, Panama; his children Skip in AZ, Susan in AZ, Molly (Brian) in Issaquah, WA, Mitchell in Salt Lake City, UT and Taylor (Mark) in Seattle, WA; his brother Douglas (Anna Marie) in Dalton Gardens, ID; his sister Pamela (John) in Bainbridge Island, WA; grandchildren Bradley and Leah (Molly) and Hayden (Taylor). Smitty had a warm, funny and positive personality. When asked how his day was going, his response was always "it couldn't be better". He was a kind, smart and caring doctor. He had many lifelong friends and always made new ones. He touched a lot of lives. Smitty was very loved and will be very missed. A "Celebration of Life" was held for Smitty in Boquete, Panama on May 18, 2017. His daughter, Taylor, spoke for the family. On short notice, over 100 people from all walks of life attended to honor his friendship, community activism and community service.
