Robert (Bob) Campbell
Class of 1966
Air Force, 20+ Years
Four months before graduation the Navy sent us to Midway Island where I met my future wife. I graduated there and was notified that my draft number was going to come up in four months. So I enlisted in the AF. rather than get conscripted in the Army. My history: Two tours in VietNam, ten years at Castle AFB Ca. One and a half at Hamilton AFB Ca. One year at Loring AFB Me. Two and a half years at Chanute AFB Il. Six years at Eielson AFB Ak. I got my B.A. through the Commuity Col. of the AF. All that while I was Acft. Crew Chief, a maintenance mech. After I got my degree I was an aircraft Superintendent. I went to VietNam as an aircraft weapons officer. I have no idea how I lived through two different tours in South Easr Asia. My last assignment was in Alaska in the Stratigic Air Command in the reconnisance Wing gathering intell. airborne, working a rough flying schedule. After that retirement, I went to work for the D.O.D. After uniformed service working for the Dept. of the Army and Air Force as a civilian was easy. There was a lot of travel involved. I took a job that enable us to buy our last house just outside Salt Lake City in the mountains over looking the Great Salt Lake. Our last five years was an assigment that saw me maintaining high altatude chambers all over the globe. This job allowed us to have my wife of 45 years to join me on a lot of trips. My wife and I married in Hawaii before I went into the service. Three days before I retired for the last time,I was told I had cancer. I received a new treatment of radiation therapy and have been free of the cancer ever since. There went my hair. I have had Sarcoidosis for ten years and have had five major surgeries for various problems from service related injuries. Sandy has come down with early Parkinsons, so its time we enjoyed the rest of our life. I think the next time we visit San Simion we will cruise through the San jaquin and visit Lemoore.
