He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War receiving numerous awards and citations including the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with three Bronze Service Stars, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Combat Infantry Badge, and the Army Commendation Medal.
