| About Me | Oh golly...I'll try to make it a short as possible. I married Jim Samolitis and we had one daughter, Nancy. In 1983, we divorced and I remarried in 1986 to the most wonderful guy in the world. Gene had two boys who also lived with us. Gene died of csncer last January. I received my RN in 1969, worked Med-Surg, OB (L&D, post-partum, neonates) and helped open two ICU's in the 70's. In 1985, I came to Hot Springs, which is where I've been employed up until last year. Here I worked in the Surgical Critical Care and took care mostly of post-op hearts. From there, I went to the Education Department and taught Critical Care (Arrhythmias, Ventilators, Hemodynamics, Intra-Aortic Ballon Pumping). I decided to try management and worked for about 6 years as Day House Supervisor. I think I put too much into it and had to get out. I am no good managing people, I have this heart on my sleeve, etc. From there, I spent the last 13 working years in the ER. We usually saw about 150 patients per day and I found my niche. The variety of the ER is enormous, the self satisfaction of patient care, and the team you work with from the docs to the techs. There is no where to go after the ER but out the door. And, I did. In 1990, I was found to have relasping remitting MS. I kept up for a long time. It wasn't the physical part of it, I could handle the pain and all my other symptoms. But, for the last few years, I found myself making errors. I'd go to get a Dilaudid out of the Med Cart, and I'd pull up a Dilantin. I was always cognizant of my mental ability and checked everything I did 2-3 times. But as the patient census increased and the stress became worse, my menatl abilites were affected even more. I am pretty sure I never had hurt a patient, but I knew it was a matter of time before I did. I retired and oh what glory! I do the charity thing now. We have a free charitable clinic here in town and see low income patients. This place is phenominal. Every doc in town is scheduled to put in their time and some evenings we put through 200 patients in 2 hours, if there are enough docs. We've got a dentist, an OB room, and 35 exam rooms. My daughetr, Nancy, obtained her MD from the University of Kentucky, internship at Northwestern, Dermatolgy Residency at the University of Utah, and a fellowship in cosmetic surgery, She is currently living in Beverly Hills with Dr. Zen Obagi. My husband had two boys by a previous marrige. They came to live with us when they were 11 and 16 y/o. Brad is married with 3 children and lives in MN. Aaron lives here in Hot Springs and works as a Loss Prevention Agent. I'm going to have to stall ...(read more) |
