About Me | August 2012 I just retired in January 2012 and am really looking forward to sitting around in a dirty teeshirt, drinking beer, and watching reruns of Andy Griffith and Dick Van Dyke. Only problem is that I don't have any dirty teeshirts and don't drink beer. It's my understanding that retirement, and the associated lack of mind-stimulating work, can lead to atrophy of the brain. I'm personally looking forward to this process - I have always had way too many things and too much on my mind. With less brain processes I can look forward to truly relaxing. Also, it's going to be great getting fat - I can see lots of coconut cream pies in my future. My career focus was primarily addressing contaminated properties, such as older industrial facilities. This included investigating and defining cleanup strategies that enable the properties to be redeveloped. Up until 1991 I moved around a fair amount relative to my education and business opportunities, as indicated below. Naperville, IL I didn’t get married until I was 46 (1994) - I was always way behind everyone else in terms of social skills. When we got married I had decided that I was too old to have any kids, even though I have always liked kids a lot. Much to my surprise we had a son in 1996, and this has been really great. He's just turning 16 and we’re in the “learning to drive†stage (where’s my valium?). My wife is Hungarian (very Hungarian) and her first choice for his name was "Zoltan" - which is a popular Hungarian name. I had to do a lot of negotiating to move her from this choice. Sounds a little StarTrek-ish or satanic doesn't it? We finally settled on the more gentle Hungarian name of “Kelemen.†Of course to date my son wishes we had gone with “Zoltan†but I’m hoping by the time he is a young adult he will thank me for saving him. I say my wife (Ildiko) is “very†Hungarian because her parents and extended family live in or just outside of Budapest, and since Kelemen was 1 yr old they have spent every summer in Hungary. I’ve visited every other year but now that I am retired will go every year. We have a small condo here and my in-laws have two cottages, so we get to travel around the country quite a bit. Plus, Budapest is a very elegant city and fun to simply walk around. Kelemen is fluent in both English and Hungarian while I continue to struggle with the language. Here are the top 10 reasons I decided to retire: 1. My wife continues to transform our townhouse into a replica of Versailles, and even if I have a real job and make lots of money I can't afford to pay for this, so I must do it myself. Based on my skill-base this will take me the next 10-15 years working full time, so I just don't have time for a real job. I will likely die with a hammer in my hand. 2. My wife has become addicted to scrapbooking and I need to get her into Scrapbooking Anonymous. 3. My son has become addicted to X-Box and I need to get him into X-Box Anonymous. 4. Someone needs to continuously monitor my son so he doesn't spend every free moment on his X-Box,Wi, cell phone, or i-Pod. 5. Someone has to walk Sadie and Sophie (the dogs that my wife and son wanted so badly!) 6. Someone has to bath Sadie and Sophie (ditto above!) 7. Someone has to feed Sadie and Sophie (ditto, ditto above!) 8. Sadie and Sophie told me that they only want me to walk them, since I take them for longer walks than anyone else. Honest to gosh - they told me this! Did you know If you walk with dogs long enough they will actually talk to you! Seriously! I didn't know this. 9. Someone has to install and update on a continual basis all our electronic gizmos (2 latops, 1 desktop, phone system with 7 phones, X-Box, Wi, Blue Ray, Blue Ray converter (to watch Hungarian movies), VHS, TV sound systems, 2 ultra-modern TVs, 3 cell phones, 1 ipod 10. My doctor told me that since I have cheated death twice I better have some fun before I strike out with number 3. Truth is I have discovered there are some things I love more than working everyday in an office. For example, when I walk the dogs I have time to really look at clouds - which I have always loved (I'm a simple man). I continue to laugh when Sophie barks at cars and Sadie barks at her because she doesn't like her doing this (I am easily entertained). It's wonderful being at home when my 15 yr old son Kelemen comes back from school and we can talk and joke. He still often sits in my lap while we do this, which is a challenge for both of us since he is now 5'6" and weighs 120 lbs (I'll do anything for love). I can actually sit down and have breakfast with my wife and talk about nothing of particular meaning, and in sit down and watch an afternoon movie or take a short trip (I'm a good boy). Plus, I get to read books just for enjoyment! Since I'm such a slow reader this takes up a lot of time. And I enjoy simply listening to people (again, I’m easily entertained). That’s my life in ...(read more) |
