Nicholas H Kalvin MD

Class of 1951

In wood-shop, Mr Wasmuth was explaining shop safety rules, walking the aisles with a three-cornered rule. Don Koster, seated behind me was looking down, paying no mind. Mr Wasmuth cracked his ruler over Don's head to the amusement of the rest of us.
In music class, Paul Jurcisin, another boy and I shared a music book as Miss Dickie, who also ran Madrigal, a group of four boys and girls was explaining a song. I was a member of Madrigal. Someone had altered a classic illustration of a man lying under a tree. It was quite amusing. As we, in the front row, giggled, Miss Dickie, irked by our behavior, looked down to see the picture. Rather than send us to the office, she just smacked the three of us with a single slap. No problem. We got off lucky, were not accused of doing the alteration. Later, in Madrigal practice, she and I laughed about it. We all loved her. I say lucky, as our parents were never told. Her 1/3 of a slap was child's play to what my old fashioned Slavic educated Dad would have dished out.
