About Me | In Feb. 2014, Katie A., Event Manager for the Fiesta Bowl organization in Arizona, submitted a nomination package with examples of my work, along with letters of support for my nomination to the Southwestern Regional U.S. Forest Service Office in Albuquerque. The nomination was for a National Smokey Bear Award. After the Regional Office reviewed it, they sent it to the Forest Service National Office in Washington, D.C. After they reviewed it, they sent it on to Dallas where it was reviewed by members of the Cooperative Forest Fire Prevention (CFFP) Committee. The CFFP Committee was created in the 1940s and includes professionals from the U.S. Forest Service, the National Association of State Foresters, and the Advertising Council. The entire review process took nearly six weeks. The National Smokey Bear Awards are given out once a year and date back to 1957. The following words are from the official National Smokey Bear Award website: "In the world of wildfire prevention, there is no greater honor than to receive a National Smokey Bear Award. The special award is reserved for people or organizations who provide sustained, outstanding service -- with significant program impact -- in the wildfire prevention arena. Honorees must exceed the expectations of their jobs and demonstrate innovation, creativity, commitment, and a passion for wildfire prevention." June 6, 2014, received a National Bronze Smokey Bear Award during a special ceremony at the Fiesta Bowl Museum in Scottsdale, Arizona. The plaque on the Bronze Smokey Bear Award statue reads: " Awarded to Gary Roberts for outstanding public service in wildfire prevention by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service, National Association of State Foresters, and the Advertising Council, Inc. 2014 The award highlighted my outstanding service and state-wide impact in Arizona over more than a decade. Arizona is the sixth largest state in the nation at 114,006 square miles. Only Alaska, Texas, California, Montana, and New Mexico are larger. Received the award as the first person in the U.S. Forest Service in the state of Arizona to get the honor for the first 58 years of the national program. To borrow from Oliver Wendell Holmes: "The secret of my success is, th...(read more) |
