Donna (Bernier) Maler
Class of 1974
Air Force, 20+ Years
Worked for a while as a secretary and then in 1983 decided to join the Air Force. Never intended to stay in 21 years, but loved it. I began my career in Administration ... my first duty assignment was the 509th Supply Sq., at Pease, New Hampshire. From there I went to Keelser, MS (Biloxi) with the 3380 Avionics Maintenance Sq., stayed there from 1985-1990 and went through my first hurricane! In July 1990, I was sent to Torrejon, Spain with the 612th Fighter Sq., quickly deployed to Turkey in support of Desert Shield/Storm. I had the honor of knowing two of the POWs from that war -- great men. After Spain, headed back to the US to Dover, Delaware (the closest I ever got to being back home. Stayed there from 1992-1995 and then headed out for Cannon AFB, NM (Clovis) --yeah I had to look it up on the map ... talk about your small towns ... At Cannon I was with the 27th Mission Suppor Sq, at first in Personnel and then became a First Sergeant ... the BEST job in the Air Force! From New Mexico, I was then stationed at 57 OSS in Las Vegas (smile ... yeah, someone had to go there). During this assigment I deployed again to Kuwait and it was here I had my best assignment as First Sergeant. Then in 2001, I took an assignment to Lajes Field, Azores -- where -- find a globe and see if you can find it ... an island 900 miles off the coast of Portugal. I was with several units here and ended up with the 65th OSS -- we had a support role during the inital phases of the current war. It was here at Lajes Field that I retired. It was a wonderful time and I don't regret it and truly enjoyed serving our country.

Jennifer L. Brande (Sheldon)
Class of 1995
Army, 10 Years
I have been in the Army since 2000 and during my time I spent my first three years on active duty (aka full time) as a cook, with assignments in South Korea, yes on the DMZ for an entire year and then to Fort Drum, NY. I then got out and joined the Army Reserve, joining a Medical Brigade HQ in Staten Island, NY, where during this assignment I changed my job to public affairs/print journalist. Upon receiving a job offer in the Washington, DC area I transferred to a Broadcast Operations Unit with the intention to go to the military broadcasters course, which I was not able to get to in a quick manner so I transferred to a regular public affairs detachment in Richmond, VA. During my assignment there, I was offered the chance to attend army historian school, which I took and lead to my subsequent deployment to Iraq, which leads us to today. I got injured while over there and I am currently getting treated for my injury, thankfully not from any incoming rounds or anything like that but nonetheless pretty frustrating.

Navy, 20+ Years
I went into the Navy July 1973. From 1973 to 1980 I worked in the weapons field as a Gunner's Mate Technician. From 1980 until I retired in July 1993, I worked in Military Law Enforcement and retired as a Master-At-Arms 1st Class Petty Officer (E-6). I served two tours on the best aircraft carrier, USS John F. Kennedy CV-67 (73-76 and then 79 to 83), three tours between Naval Station Norfolk and Naval Air Station Norfolk (76 to 79, 83 to 87 and 89 to 93) and I also served one tour on an Navy Oiler, USS Platte (AO-186) from 87 to 89. My last tour, 89-93, I worked as a Training Petty Officer and taught Military Shore Patrol Academies. I helped design and teach the academic portion as well as the physical part which included Defensive Tactics, Tactical Handcuffing and PR-24 Police Baton Certifications. I was also responsible for maintaining all pertinent training records for all the service members that went through our training programs. I had the most enjoyment during my last four years in the Navy as a teacher and instructor passing on the knowledge and expertise I had learned over my 20 years to other military personnel.
