Samuel P. Shaffar

Samuel P. Shaffar

Class of 1940

Sam Shaffar spent 28 years in the Air Force (part of that was in the Army Air Corps). He met and married his wife of 60 years, had 3 children, 4 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

He served in WWII in Germany and also in Viet Nam. He was stationed in Illinois, Georgia, New York, Alaska, Nevada, Texas, Maine and Nebraska. He retired in 1970 at the rank of Chief Master Sergeant.

In 1965 he had throat cancer, which recurred in 1970 when he had a laryngectomy. He moved to California with his wife and they resided there until she passed away in 2004. He then moved back to San Antonio, Texas where two of his children also live.

At the age of 91 he was diagnosed with lymphoma, underwent 4 chemo treatments and was sent home under hospice care. He is currently doing extremely well and looking forward to his 92nd birthday in February.

Of all his accomplishments, his children believe the most outstanding achievement in his life was being a successful Dad. He was an amazing role model, taught them responsibility, dependability, optimism and all the necessary skills to be productive, happy people.
