About Me | About all of us: My big brother just reminded me that our sophomore year is now as long ago as the end of World War 1 was then. Anyway... Now that I write about my life it has a kind of lyrical quality and I know I'm going on way too long. (Lucky for you I'm a slow typist or I'd write a memoir) You obviously don't have to read it (It's not like I'm telling you in person about my dream or my day at the office), but I assume each of us has an interesting story to tell, at least to the people we knew, and I'm trying to encourage you guys to share with us on this rather underused website. Don't be so cool. The world in which we became ourselves no longer exists and perhaps even folks in later JMM classes would be interested in such stuff as kind of a history. Right after graduation I went to Montana with my older brother (JMM'70) to help build our family cabin, then to Colorado with MA (72) and MS (x73) to be laborers and sleep under the stars for a month or two. The next year I hitched to Wyoming with SH (72) and almost got killed climbing the Grand Teton. It was a transformative experience. S became a legendary climber (literally hundreds of first ascents, national sport climbing champion, known for his "preternatural strength") and I became an inveterate hitchhiker. Lived in a hippie house on the east side, finished college at UW, spent the winter in NYC and knew immediately that I would live there someday, drove a garbage truck for the Madison Dept. of Streets and Sewers. The next winter I met SW (73) and we drove her dad's car to Fla., flew to Mexico and traveled around Central America. She was a great traveler and it was, again, life-changing. I then hitched around the west visiting relatives in NM, CO and MT. Back in Madison I ran into the Kenosha Kid, whom I knew through my roommates, and went to L.A. with him in his wagon full of amplifiers. I continued up the coast to Vancouver and back through Reno to visit SS(72) and Denver to Madison and did easy jobs and enjoyed the late night lifestyle till it was time to move to NY. I loved the city but my first year was hyper-stressful and I lived way the hell out in Brooklyn so I bailed and returned to Central America and stayed for a few months to sort things out. Back in Albuquerque, penniless again, I borrowed a suit from from my cousin and went to SH's wedding in another town. S told me of his career plans, which were partly based on his intent to avoid stress and interference with his true passions. It all made such obvious sense. I hitched around the west again and then to Madison, where I stayed with my parents till I couldn't wait to be back in the city... I finally went back, in like October, because The Who and The Clash, two great live bands, were playing together at Shea Stadium. I cleaned apartments for rich guys to get some money, and then one night in Manhattan, a notoriously tough place in which to get any traction at all, opened up and said...(read more) |
