Army, 8 Years

My active duty Army career involved almost 8 years and included two tours to Iraq (22 months). I enlisted as an Infantry Soldier and completed Basic Training at Ft. Benning, GA. I graduated from Airborne Paratrooper training also at Ft. Benning, GA and was assigned to my 1st duty station at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii w/ the 25th Infantry Division. My training also included graduating from the Air Assault School in Hawaii. I deployed to Iraq for my 1st combat tour and earned an Officer Candidate School slot. I graduated from OCS and earned my commission as an officer. My officer training involved Air Defense and Armor branches of the Army. My additional duty stations were Ft. Bliss, TX and Ft. Knox, KY. I would graduate from the advance officer training and the Scout Leaders Course to include the Modern Army Combatives (Brazilian Jiu-Jitzu) courses. I competed in competitions and was an instructor at various duty stations. Later, I PCSed to my last duty station at Ft. Carson, CO and the 4th Infantry Division. I deployed a 2nd time to Iraq for 15 months. My duties as a soldier included being a gunner, driver, RTO, Training Room NCO, Platoon Leader, Executive Officer, and the Deputy Brigade Civil Affairs Officer. I resigned my commission in 2009 and was honorably discharged in July of 2009. I'll never forget my service w/ the Army and my fellow brothers who have sacrificed all. Prayers continue to go out to my friends and their families and fellow soldiers who have lost their lives in battle. I would not be alive today, if it weren't for my battle buddy on my left and right. God bless all of our soldiers past, present, and future. Freedom is never free! Hooah!

Joined in September 1954 in Redding, CA. I did my basic at Fort Ord, CA. I left and went to Camp Gordon, GA for MP School. I graduated in early Jan 55 and was put on a train with 19 others and sent to Holloman AFB, NM. We joined 12th Ordnance Battalion (swd). Check out Atomic Annie. In Europe, we received ammo for her and others. We never existed. I got out in 1957. I hung around in Chillicothe for about a year. I hitch hiked back to CA. I was an Apprentice Carpenter. Times got tough and the jobs were hard to find. I enlisted in the Army again in June 1960. Again a refresher course at Fort Ord, CA. I was shipped to the 175 MP Detachment at Camp des Loges, just outside Paris, France. I was there 2 years. I then transferred to the Armed Forces Courier Service. I was at Orly Airport from 1962 to 1963. I came back to the USA, Land of the Round Doorknobs. I was sent to the ARFCOS Station at the Presidio of San Francisco. I Loved it. I was there from 1963 to late 1966. Then it was on the other side of the USA at Stewart AFB, NY with 1st Region NORAD (North American Air Defense). I was there until 1968. I arrived in Vietnam on 1 Oct 1968. I was sent to Phu Bai, RVN and the NCOIC of G4 for XXIV Corps under the command of General Richard Stillwell. I came home in late Jan 1970. I took a side trip and worked at the R&R Station in Sydney, Australia for 100 days TDY. From there it was a military mistake, they shipped me to Washington DC to be with ARFCOS again. After they corrected the mistake, I ended up back at the Presidio of San Francisco with the 6th Recruiting District as the Senior Enlisted Administrator for the office of the Adjutant. Then it was off again, I did stay at PSF from 1970 to late 1971. I was sent to Fort Jackson, SC as the Accessions NCO for the All Volunteer Army Test Program. They are using parts of that test today. While there, as with every soldier, I had to check into the Education Center. The lady there loved it. I had 3 years of college credits in nothing. She put me on a schedule. I managed to get two years credits in one year and was qualified for the military Boot Strap program. I left Fort Jackson and went to Campbell College in Buies Creek, NC for 16 months to get a degree in Business and I did get the degree. From there, I was off to the Netherlands to take the position of Sergeant Major of the Personnel and Administration Division of the Allied Forces Central Europe (AFCENT). Please note, I was a Sergeant First Class (E7) taking a Sergeant Major (E9) position. I worked with 7 different nations in this NATO Command. After AFCENT, I was sent back to the Presidio of San Francisco until I retired from the Army.
