John was an exceptional musician and played several instruments. He played tuba in the HHS band, and was an active member of the local drum and bugle corps. HHS music teacher Lew Higgle was his mentor who opened doors fo John's success. John admitted publicly that he goofed off skin school after the death of his dad when he was in 5th grade at Northside. Failing to graduate with his peers, he was tutored NY Doris Lyman so he graduated a year or two later. He went on to college where he earned his BS and MS, and taught school after serving in the armed forces. He adored his wife, Brooke, another musician who passed from a physical condition. He married a second time to a woman from Russia, but it was unsuccessful and they divorced in 2025. In his final year, he moved from Kansas City and his lovely brick home surrounded by flowers, to Rochester, N Y., to be near his daughter's family and 2 much- adored grandsons. John drove a red convertible sports car.
John was a highly respected musician in the drum and bugle corps community, and was sought after to teach and judge D&B for worldwide corps. He also invented and was famous for his invention of an alternative design for the bugle.

He was a rabid Democrat and he adored cardinals.
