About	Betty J. Johnson (nee Brandt), age 89, of Merrillville, IN, passed away on Friday, December 8, 2017. Betty was born in Gary, IN on July 16, 1928 and lived at her home in Merrillville, IN until the time of her passing. She was a graduate of Horace Mann High School and Indiana University Bloomington, IN and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Education. She taught at Tolleston Elementary School as a second-grade teacher before she became a homemaker. She was a member of Alpha Xi Delta Sorority, Beta Gamma Upsilon, and the Northwest Indiana Genealogy Society. She was previously a long-standing volunteer at the Methodist Hospital and St. Mary Medical Center, and a past member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Merrillville, IN. Betty was most proud of being a mother to her three children. Betty is survived by her beloved children: Craig (Deborah) Johnson, Linda (Paul) Carey who was also her caregiver, and Laura (Frederick) Newman; her grandchildren: Randall (Kathryn) Johnson, Pamela Johnson, Paul Carey, Jacob Carey, and Frederick Newman; great-grandchildren: Melody Johnson and Colin Johnson; along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband: Marvin Carl Johnson; her parents: Alfred William Brandt and Matha Ruge Brandt; and her brother: Alfred W. Brandt (Marilyn). Betty spent countless hours researching her family history and helped in researching records at local cemeteries for the NWI Genealogy Society of which she was very proud. In years past, she loved playing cards, Tripoli, and bridge with her family, friends, and her special group of relatives (GG Group). She was cherished by her family and will be greatly missed.
