About Joan Creahan Cleavenger passed away on Saturday morning, April 15th at the Sycamore Health Center after suffering from a fall at her residence on Monday, April 10th.
Joan was born July 6, 1919 in Gary, Indiana, the daughter of Charles Andrew and Mabel Eckstrom Creahan and graduated from Horace Mann High School near Chicago where she had lifelong friends of Dodo, Ozzie, Fran, Sissie and Marge who all knew her as "Charlie." She graduated from Stephens College and from Lake Forest College.
Joan was married to Edmund Brown Cleavenger in 1947. Together, they had 3 loving children: Edmund Brown, Winifred Lee and David Andrew. Mom and "Granny" was loved and survived by Ed and Susan Cleavenger, Brittany Cleavenger Bass and her husband Courtney Bass, the great grandchildren Emma and Stokes Bass as well as Colby and Robyn Cleavenger, the great grandchildren Atkins and Ollie Cleavenger; Winifred Cleavenger and husband Brooks Kerrick and David and Carol Cleavenger.
Joan was predeceased by her husband over 40 years ago and continually showed great courage and determination to her final moments. She loved and constantly cared about her children, her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren as they were a constant source of inspiration and joy. As her hearing suffered and her eyesight became problematic, her friend became her "transistor" radio, which became her lifeline to information, news and her beloved local sports teams. Her favorite teams, the Cincinnati Reds and Dayton Flyers' lost a longtime fan.
The family is planning a "Celebration of Joan's Life" event Saturday July 22, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, 20 West First Street, Dayton, Ohio 45402 to coincide with what would have been her 98th birthday and next milestone that she came so close to achieving.
