Graduation Year Class of 1942

About Charles Robert Templin died on Sunday, September 20th after a rich, long life. Chuck was born in Gary, Indiana on May 27, 1924 to Theodore B. Templin and Gladys Mary (O'Hara) Templin. Chuck grew up in Gary graduating from Horace Mann High School in 1942. After completing a semester at the University of Chicago, he joined the Army where he served in the European Theater until the end of the war in 1945. He saw combat action in France following the Normandy invasion and in Germany, received the Bronze Star, and participated in the liberation of the concentration camp at Nordhausen.

Chuck completed his undergraduate education at DePauw University in Indiana, earned an M.A. at Notre Dame University, and pursued doctoral studies at Michigan State University. Throughout his career he worked mainly in secondary education including administrative positions in British Honduras (now Belize), the Virgin Islands, and Liberia, West Africa. It was in this last assignment that he met Edith Kyle whom he married on May 18, 1968. Chuck and Eadie both served on the faculty of Cuttington College in Liberia and lived there for five years. When their first son, Jack, was 2 years old and the second, Chris, was a newborn, they moved to Vermont where Chuck became Education Director of Pine Ridge School in Williston.

In Vermont Chuck found his work stimulating and important. The field of special education was relatively new and full of interesting research. His colleagues at Pine Ridge were dedicated, and the work sustained and fed his lifelong love of learning. He retired at 65 after 17 years. A member of the Episcopal Church for much of his adult life, Chuck was active at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul in Burlington, serving on the Vestry, chairing the committee on adult education, and participating in all sorts of activities and service projects. At the Diocesan level he was a member of the Board of Rock Point School, the Diocesan Council, and the Committee for Christian Spirituality.

Chuck loved to travel and took many trips with his family in the U.S. and to Europe, Canada, and Mexico. His favorite pastime, especially in his later years, was building a large library of books and articles on Christian spirituality.

Chuck was predeceased by his wife Eadie. He is survived by his sons: Jack of Providence, RI and his wife Jennifer Trayner, and their daughter Ada; and Chris of Northampton, MA and his wife Naomi Shulman and their daughters Lila and Stella.
