Daniel J. Mahala, age 96, of Merrillville, IN passed away on Tuesday, September 29, 2015.
Dan is survived by one daughter, Donna Mahala of Merrillville; one nephew, Ray (Dawn) Maas of Valparaiso; nieces: Carol, Donna, Cheyene and Whitney. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor (nee Mason); parents; one brother and one sister.
Dan graduated from Horace Mann High School in 1936. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He enlisted 3 days after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Dan served aboard the USS North Carolina (BB-55), nickname "Showboat", for 4 years. He was involved in every naval offensive battle earning 15 battle stars. He loved talking about WWII history. Dan enjoyed racing hydro-plane boats.
