About Wilson-Comer PhD, Dr. Marian Wilson-Comer, 76, of Gary, IN passed away January 9, 2015 in Gary, IN.

Marian graduated from Froebel High School in 1956 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science from Roosevelt University, a Master of Arts from Indiana University and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Illinois. She was committed to lifelong learning; her post-doctoral education included receiving a Rocker Fellow Grant, being named as a Fellow with the American Council on Education and a fellowship at the National Institutes of Health as an Extramural Associate. She studied at Purdue University where she studied to become a master gardener. She was a dedicated educator; she taught science at Horace Mann High School and biology at Indiana University Northwest in Gary, and botany, biology, electron microscopy, and horticulture at Chicago State University. Her academic leadership was recognized during her long career as a Professor of Botany at Chicago State University where she retired as Professor Emeritus of Biology.

During her career she served the University in many roles: Dean for Student Services, Assistant Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Assistant to the Provost, and Chair of the Department of Biological Science and Executive Director of the Illinois Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation. Her community leadership expanded throughout the Chicagoland/Northwest Indiana region. Her dedication to education, the sciences, environment, and academic inclusion was constantly exhibited. She broadened the scope of particularly urban students to the world of science. She maintained education brought about a world of resources and options, often not developed in the standard curriculum, to give students access. She taught people to dream bigger. Marian was an active life member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., having even chartered Sigma Phi Omega Chapter in NW Indiana.
