About	William J. 'Bill' Flynn III, 87, of Pottsville, died Monday morning at Schuylkill Medical Center-East Norwegian Street. Born Aug. 29, 1927, in Gary, Ind., he was a son of the late William J. Jr. and Catherine Wiltzius Flynn. He was a 1945 graduate of Horace Mann High School, Gary, Ind., and a 1951 graduate of the University of Notre Dame with a degree in mechanical engineering. He served in the Marine Corp. Upon graduation from Notre Dame, he accepted a position as an engineer with Gary Steel Mills and then Gary Slag Corp. Mr. Flynn's true passion in life was coaching and educating. These led to him accepting a position at Pottsville Area High School. He influenced many students and players during his more than 30-year career as an algebra and trigonometry instructor and head football coach. He coached Pottsville to 14 winning seasons from 1967-82. During his entire career, he coached a total of 32 years at five different high schools in El Paso, Texas; Dallas, Texas; and the Chicago Catholic League winning their first league title. Mr. Flynn was a member of St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, Pottsville; an inducted member of the Allen-Rogowicz Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame; the Schuylkill County Football Hall of Fame; the Pottsville High Hall of Fame; and the prestigious Monogram Club of the University of Notre Dame. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters. He is survived by the love of his life, the former Marie Sammy, Pottsville, to whom he would have celebrated 61 years of marriage on Dec. 26. He is also survived by sons, William J. Flynn IV and his wife, Christine, Burke, Va., Michael T. Flynn and his wife, Therese, Lebanon, N.J., and Thomas E. Flynn, Pottsville; daughters, Kathryn M. Igoe and her husband, William, Chicago, Ill., Elizabeth S. Cardia and her husband, Roy, Cape Cod, Mass., and Martha L. Erf and her husband, Eric, Chicago, Ill.; brothers, David Flynn, South Carolina, and Jerry Flynn, Indiana; sisters, Suzanne Whitehead, South Carolina, MaryLou Casey, Illinois, and Barbara Green, Arizona; 11 grandchildren; a great-grandson; nieces and nephews.
