About | Bert Sendak, decorated World War II veteran, passed away on Tuesday, October 8, 2013. He was 93 years old. Bert was born in London, England on November 18, 1918, the son of Jack Sendak and Annette Franklin. He graduated from Horace Mann High School in Gary and attended Chicago Music School, Roosevelt College, and graduated from Indiana University, Northwest. Bert served in the U.S. Army during World War II touring the South Pacific and participated in the Solomon Island Campaign earning the Bronze Stars. After the war, Bert owned and operated Gary Electric Company and married Beatrice Weiss on August 19, 1945. He pursued his passion for music and organized several big bands throughout his life playing the trumpet and continued to give music lessons until his later years. Bert served as a Colonel in the Indiana Guard Reserve, was appointed as deputy sheriff for Lake County, IN, and was a member of the 32nd Mason and of Beth Israel Congregation. Bert is survived by his wife of 68 years, Beatrice; son, Michael (Janice) from Baltimore, MD; brother, Ronald from Virginia Beach, VA; two grandchildren: Courtney and Mekayla |
