About	Beloved husband of Judith LaFourest, died in Indianapolis on Sunday morning, February 3, 2013. He was 84. Born in Gary, Indiana on July 14, 1928, to Orville and Irmadean Waddell Lugar, he graduated from Horace Mann High School in 1946, and from Indiana University- Purdue University in 1980, with a Bachelor of Liberal Arts and Sciences degree in Economics. William worked for Allison General Motors in Indianapolis for 42 years. He became a jet engine inspector, specializing in metallurgy before retiring in 1992. He was a member of the U.A.W. In 1985, he became a Mason, a Shriner, and a member of the Scottish Rite. He cared deeply for the organizations and believed in their goals. He was a life member. Baptized in Gary as a Baptist, he attended church there until he moved to Indianapolis in the 1950's. In Indianapolis he and his children went to a Mennonite church; in Lawrence he attended All Souls Unitarian and in the summer in Wisconsin he worshiped at a Methodist church. Bill was open-minded. For years, six days a week, Bill worked The Indianapolis Star crossword puzzle…in ink. Until a severe stroke in July 2012, he enjoyed his time doing this, -- although as the Alzheimer's progressed he no longer used pen and he often could not get all the blocks filled in. Bill taught his children to fish, boat, swim, water ski, hunt, golf, bowl, play poker, and other games. He was able to fix and build and bake and cook. From 1966 he reared his six children by himself while working and attending IUPUI part-time. He and Judith married on December 20, 1977. Bill was a man's man, but he was also a feminist. In the 1970's, Bill was active in the Women's Equality movement and marched in Washington, D.C, Chicago, and Indianapolis for the E.R.A, for N.O.W., and for Pro-Choice. He was a supporter of a feminist publication called WOMANKIND (1977-1983) and The National League of American Pen Women, an "Organization of Creative Women in the Arts since 1897." William was an avid Indiana University basketball fan, but also liked watching Butler games, too. His wife, step-daughter, and youngest son moved to the Butler area in 1989, where Judith taught English at Butler University. Bill enjoyed fishing and driving, and often drove his family to various lake vacations. In the winter of 1988, he and Judith purchased a summer home in northern Wisconsin. Bill relished life, his family and friends. He loved to laugh, and loved to make those around him laugh with him. He was a good father and husband. William is survived by his five sons, Michael Lugar, Robert Lugar, David (Bethanne) Lugar, Mark (Denise) Lugar, and Paul LaFourest; his step-daughter, Bethanne Gruner; his brother, James (Rita) Lugar, his sister, Patricia (Fred) Terry; grandchildren; great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. His son, William Glenn Lugar; his daughter, Deborah Lugar (Jerry) McClung, and his sister, Darlene (Natasha) Lugar Greene (Emmett) Eiland, and his parents preceded him in death.
