About Angie Costas Gary Angie Costas, 71, died on Sept. 14, 2004 at Mountain Area Hospice after a short battle with cancer.

Born September 3, 1933 in Gary Indiana to Harry and Katherine Palvas, Angie was preceded in death by her parents and her younger brother Harry Palvas, Jr.

Angie was associated with Wilco Food Centers in Indiana. Since relocating to Western North Carolina in 1986, she had been active in retail business, real estate, and for the past several years had been the deep voice in the box office at Flat Rock Playhouse. Angie enjoyed baking for and feeding all her friends and co-workers. People will be losing weight because of her absence. One of Angie's great joys was volunteering. She contributed time to the Ashville Surgery Center, Mission St. Joseph Hospital, Kiwanis, Hospice in Hendersonville, and Altrusa in Gary, IN. She was a member of All Soul's Cathedral in Asheville.

One of the best descriptions of Angie is found in a letter received a few weeks ago from one of her previous employees in Gary. Following is an excerpt: "I recently learned that Angie is ill. I used to work for her at Wilco. Upon finding out the news, tears came to my eyes. Outside of my mother and grandmothers, Angie had the largest impact as a female on my life. I have your mother to thank for promoting me to store Co-Manager, the first African American to ever hold that position. In my present business life I have dealt with many CEO's of large companies and they pale compared to her business acumen, honesty, and sensitivity. Angie pioneered diversity training. She did not judge on anything but your ability to do your job. On the surface she seemed gruff, past all that she was a great soul. Your mom impacted many and I thank God for that."
