About John J. Carr, age 67, of Merrillville, IN, passed away May 6, 2007.

John was a member of the Gary Sportsman's Club, the Merrillville Optimist Club (President 1973-1974) (Vice-President 1971-1972), the Merrillville Jaycees (President 1971-1972), Merrillville Boy's Basketball (President 1971-1978), Merrillville Little League (President 1972), Merrillville Pop Warner (Vice-President 1971-1972), Merrillville Chamber of Commerce, committee member of the Merrillville Hospital Fund Drive, a counselor for the American Institute of Banking and a member of the Downtown Businessmen's Association. He was awarded the Sagamore of the Wabash by Governor Evan Bayh. John was the Merrillville 5th Ward Councilman from 1972-1975 and a Merrillville School Board Trustee from 1985-1993. From 1958 to 1959, he played professional baseball with Cleveland (North Platte, NE) and the Chicago Cubs (Paris, IL). An avid golfer, John was an initiator of the children's bowling league in Merrillville and an advocate of involving children and young people in many sports; being very active in baseball, basketball and softball leagues. He was retired from the Indiana State Highway as District Administration Manager. John had also been employed by the Lake County Highway Department. He was previously employed by the Bank of Indiana and the Hoosier State Bank.

John was preceded in death by his grandmother, Ruth Carr; and his parents: Phyllis Walters and John Carr. He is survived by his wife, Rose Ann; three children: John R. (Angie) Carr of Keota, IA, Cheryl (Kevin) Cunningham of Crown Point, IN and Jennifer (Tony) Waldschmidt of Crown Point, IN; step-son, Marc (Stacy) Antich of Crown Point, IN; six grandchildren: Sarah (Josh) Greiner, Joshua Carr, Ryan Carr, Kevin Cunningham, Ashley Cunningham and Hayley Cunningham; two step-grandchildren: Nicholas and Kasie Antich; and loving aunt, Maxine Rice of Portage, IN.
