Norman S. Care, 63, professor of philosophy at Oberlin College since 1965, died of complications from a brain tumor Tuesday, September 4, at the Kendal at Oberlin Health Center.

Care wrote six books. His most recent, "Decent People," was published by Rowman & Littlefield last year.

He was a member of the Professional Advisory Committee of the Center for Biomedical Ethics at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and participated in the First Global Future Generations Kyoto Forum in 1994.

Care, who was born in Gary, Ind., graduated from Indiana University in 1959. He earned a master's degree in philosophy from the University of Kansas in 1961 and a doctorate from Yale University in 1964. In 1962, he attended Oxford University in England on a Fulbright Fellowship.

He received the Sears-Roebuck Foundation Teaching Excellence and Campus Leadership Award in 1991 and the Oberlin College Distinguished Teaching Award in 2000.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Barbara; son, Steven of Boise, Idaho; daughter, Jennifer of Hudson; and five grandchildren.
