About Alice Catherine Halpin, age 84, formerly of Merrillville, IN, died November 15, 2016.

She was born in Gary on August 18, 1932 to the late Myra Belle (Abbott) and Charles F. Halpin. She is survived by her sister Myra Belle Halpin, sister-in-law Helen Halpin; and nieces and nephews: Leo Firme (Mary Fox), Kevin Firme, Theodore Firme (Egle), Dennis Firme (Beverly), Mary Helen Williams (Steve), Charles Halpin, Ann Bell (Dan), and Joseph Halpin (Michele), and many grandnieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her sister Ellen Firme and brother Charles Halpin.

Alice taught math from junior high through college levels. She began teaching at Horace Mann Jr.-Senior High School, where she chaired the department. From 1974 until her retirement, she taught in the Highland Schools, where she was the sponsor to the student council. For a decade, she was an adjunct lecturer in math at Indiana University Northwest. Alice had been a lector and involved in many organizations at St. Stephen Martyr Church. The Horace Mann High School graduate earned her Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from DePaul University and her Master of Science degree for teachers in mathematics from the Illinois Institute of Technology. She was a member of Pi Mu Epsilon Fraternity, a national honorary mathematics fraternity. She was known for her smile, sunny disposition, patience, love of bridge and family, and ability to teach students any level of math. Alice will truly be missed by all who knew and loved her.
