Sharon K Hurdlow (Queen) was born in East Chicago, Indiana at St. Catherine’s Hospital. Her DOB was 6/30/1942. Sharon’s mother died shortly after her birth and she was raised by her father and uncle. While attending catholic school through 8th grade, she became known as quite a jokester and was a frequent visitor of the principals’ office. Her hands and knuckles got quite the workout with the rulers the nuns used! Sharon attended Horace Mann High School in Gary, Indiana and afterwards started working at the Anderson Company in the cafeteria, which is where she met her husband Leroy. Sharon loved to tell the story of how she made a mistake filling the sugar canister for the coffee. She put salt in it, and the President of the company was not very happy with his “surprise.” It was a good thing Leroy was a rising star in the accounting department! After Sharon and Leroy married in 1962, they had 2 children, Brian Eugene and Kevin Patrick. Brian entered the U.S. Army after high school and served over 20 years. While in the army, Brian married and fathered 3 children (Brian, Jessica, and Michael Patrick). Jessica now has 2 children of her own (Lily and Elijah). After his service was finished, Brian worked for the Department of Defense and was in charge of many high-tech endeavors. Unfortunately, he passed away in September of 2016 due to a motorcycle accident. Kevin now lives in Kent, WA after traveling throughout his life. He also attended college and is currently working both in the medical field and also in the transportation industry helping seniors and disabled persons. While her children were in high school, Sharon worked for the Indiana Department of Transportation. That is just a fancy way of saying she worked on the Toll Road! Sharon was a toll booth collector for over 20 years until she retired. She met several local celebrities and athletes traveling from Chicago to Northwest Indiana to get to their vacation houses. The list includes Oprah and Michael Jordan, among others. Sharon lived life with a passion that was felt by everyone she met. She always said to live life to the fullest each day, because you never know what tomorrow will bring. Services will be held at 233 5th Avenue South in Kent on June 9th. Sharon loved animals, especially cats. So, if one desires, please make a donation to your local humane society for her.
