Walter Edward Presley
Class of 1931
By James (‘Jim’) Presley re: my Dad, Walter Edward Presley born in 1911 so Dad would have been in class of ‘30 or ‘31 but we just do not know. Despite flat feet and his age, thirty-two Dad managed to join the Army fighting Hitler. He was with the Black Panther Division and fought in France, Belgium, and Germany as a driver on the famous “Red Ball Express” one of the crucial elements giving the Allies a logistical advantage over the Bosch. A Red Ball painted on the sides of their trucks, these drivers had priority over all traffic, because they carried vital supplies to the warriors on the front lines. Our Dad was lucky to survive a near death experience in south France when he stumbled into concealed forest quicksand. It had almost completely gobbled him but his ‘buddy’ held out his rifle just far enough to reach Dad and saved his life. That man there because of the ‘buddy system’ ordering all fighters to have a ‘buddy’ with them at all times off base. Dad’s savior that day was William Allen, and my parents named their second son William Allen Presley in his remembrance. That second son was brilliant like his father, and was accepted into the Harvard class of 1969. Although older than my brother having left my position with the Razorback football team, coach Frank Broyles, when Dad died suddenly and I took over Dad’s furniture business. Later, returning to Fayetteville, I too was accepted by Harvard as a transfer student and graduated in ‘69 like brother Bill, and then was accepted into Stanforvfor an MBA. Al Gore was in our class too, but we don’t recall running into him. (Nor do I have much faith in his doomsday message.)Sons and grandsons of my Dad graduated from the county’s best schools three Harvard grads, Air Force Academy, two Stanford grads, an Emory grad, and two at UNC Chapel Hill, and U. Of Texas undergrad and masters. We have no doubt that God’s blessings of clear thought came to us through our dear father and grandfather, Walter E Presley, a graduate of Hope High School. And in that High School we are well proud. Best wishes to you all from the Presleys.
