James L. Humble

Class of 1967

The Good Lord sent me
a Guardian Angel to Watch Over Me!

I finish basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio Texas, and was transferred to Chanute Air Force in Rantoul, Illinois for tech school. I started out as an single engine jet mechanic.

I got called into the office and told I was being transferred to ICBM’s, after thinking about it, at the time about the only thing with single engine jet was Helicopter Turbo’s, ( Vietnam) Thank You Lord!

My second encounter was at Chanute Air Force in Rantoul, Illinois, it was Christmas Holiday, I went up to Chicago, Illinois, every site to see was free of charge to Military in Uniform. I got there some where around 6:00am, I was allowed cat nap in the train depot until around 8:00am when store here and there started to open.

I walked around for several hours taking in the sites, around 3:00pm I stopped off at the USO Club there sitting talking to other fellow military personal. When I got the felling I needed to get back to base. I returned and asked if there was any messages for me. The barracks guard said no!

I signed back out and said I will be at USO Club just off base. That is where I got a call from my brother in-law back in my home state of Idaho, over a thousand mile away! Telling me that the uncle that raised me and put me through 1-12 grade school had be in an auto accident and died!

My third time I got home from the military, got a job, met this dude at work and got bar hopping to gather. It went on for about a year, when one knight I got home and was standing at my apartment door all by my self when all of a sudden I heard this voice, “JIM WHERE ARE YOU HEADED?” Needless to say, I stopped drinking and bar hopping and started back to church!

My froth time I just got married in February and that summer we had our first camp and fishing trip together. We went to the West end of Island Park, we had spent a week there Jun 5, 1976 we was packing up to come home and my wife kept saying we need to get home, I kinda drug my feet because we were only about an hour and half from home.
We finally got on the road, down off Aston Pass and across the flat and up on the toward Pocatello and at Broadway exit in Idaho Falls. When on the radio came the broadcast about the Teton Dam just broke, it flooded the whole valley we just drove through.
