About Norman James Schuman

Norman James Schuman, D.D.S., M.P.H., 66, passed away Thursday, July 7, 2016, in Memphis, Tennessee. He was born December 2, 1949, in Bronx, New York, the eldest son of Dr. Walter and Olga Schuman.

Norman met Varda Gross, his wife of 46 years, on a trip to Israel. After their marriage, he followed in his father's footsteps, earning a Doctorate of Dental Surgery from Temple University. He further completed a specialty in oral pediatrics at Temple and a Master's in Public Health at the Johns Hopkins University.

While in the Northeast, Norman and Varda had a son Lloyd and daughters Stefanie and Randi. In 1980, they relocated to Memphis, where Norman became a Professor of Public Health at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Dentistry. There he founded a clinic to provide dental care to impoverished children. He authored over 60 published papers in dental and public health research. Norman was also a captain in the U.S. Army Reserve, honorably discharged in 1988.

Norman put his love of family first. During his retirement, he was an avid trivia player, winning a regional championship on a team with his family, in addition to countless other competitions. He spent much of his spare time as a student of history, language, and film.

Survivors include his wife Varda; his mother Olga Schuman of Roslyn, NY; and his three children, Lloyd Schuman and wife Daphne of Memphis; Dr. Stefanie Schuman and husband Brian Alvo of Durham, NC; and Randi Harrington and husband Stuart of Memphis. His five grandchildren are Kacie and Ashley Schuman of Memphis; Ethan Alvo of Durham; and Miles and Juliet Harrington of Memphis. His siblings are Dr. Mitchell Schuman of Short Hills, NJ; Dr. Joel Schuman of New York; and Beth Rosenman of New York. He is also survived by his beloved dog, Penny.
