Howard’s determination, love of family and friends, religion, and sense of humor sustained him. He was born in Philadelphia, PA, on June 12, 1949, to Philip Melvin and Pauline Nachman. He lived with his parents and paternal grandparents in Herndon above the Nachman’s Inc. store until moving down the street to the house his father built where he lived with his parents, brother, and maternal grandmother. Working alongside his family at the store brought him great joy. After the store closed, he loved working with his brother Arthur (although you wouldn’t know it by the way they spoke to each other) on their real estate ventures. His “hobbies” were always related to family and community. He was in Herndon’s first graduating class of Fire and Rescue EMTs and served as President of the Herndon Volunteer Fire Department and of the Retired Volunteer Fire Department Association, as well as Vice Mayor of Herndon. His love of Judaism and the Jewish community made him an active member of Chabad of Northern Virginia and Congregation Olam Tikvah where he served as president, head of security, and real estate agent. He is survived by his beloved wife of 44 years Rhona Nachman and his two daughters Candace and Natalie Nachman. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 22 at 10:30 am at Congregation Olam Tikvah, 3800 Glenbrook Road, Fairfax, VA. The family will receive visitors prior to the funeral service. Interment to follow at Beth Isaac Adath Israel Cemetery in Dundalk, MD. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Israel Guide Dog Center for the Blind, the Humane Society of the U.S., ASPCA, the FIDF, Congregation Olam Tikvah, Chabad of NOVA, Kehilat Pardes-the Rock Creek Synagogue, or an organization fighting to cure diabetes and kidney disease. Howard inhabits so many memories of my years in Herndon. I spent many hours in the store from childhood until the store closed, long after I was grown and married. Howard always got my vote and support on Town Council and kept me informed on the important happenings in the community. He was a friend and fellow Herndonite. I pray that memories of time spent with him will help to ease the loss for his family and friends. With deepest sympathy, Jane Duzan Bourne Memories from Herndon high school days. Always had a big smile on his face. Richard Christian |
