Richard was born in Glenville, West Virginia to Brooks and Nannie Barrett on June 13, 1933. Richard grew up in the tight-knit community of Glenville, West Virginia, attending and playing sports at Gilmer County High School. He spent many years working at summer and sports camps in his community. He then went on to play sports and earn a degree in Education from Glenville State University. In 2015 Richard was honored and was inducted into the Glenville State University Athletic Hall of Fame for his college sports play in football, basketball and golf. He started his career in teaching at Hurricane High School in West Virginia, where he taught math and was the head basketball and assistant football coach. Richard served our country in the Army at Fort Monroe Va where he met his wife, Tinka. They relocated to Herndon Virginia, where he worked as a Math Teacher and Coach in the early 1960s. https://www.adamsgreen.com/obituaries/Richard-K-Barrett?obId=32111811 Richard moved briefly to George C. Marshall High School when it first opened. There he was the first basketball coach. He worked odd jobs during this time. The one that stands out is he was one of the first 5 employees of Reston. As the first homes were being built, he drove folks around to show the new neighborhoods and properties. He then moved back to teaching and coaching at Herndon High School. You could find him in room 123 with a sign on the door that read, “Grin and Barrett” until 1986. While at Herndon, Richard coached football, baseball, golf and tennis. He taught Drivers Education with his buddies, Jim Ashwell and Gus Panagos - making the streets safer for Northern Virginia. Richard was a top-ranked basketball referee in Northern Virginia working many Regional and State Tournaments. He also served as President of the NoVA Basketball Officiating Association. In 1986, Richard retired and moved back to his childhood home in Glenville, West Virginia. In Richard's spare time, he enjoyed playing golf, fishing, basketball, watching Glenville sports and occasionally a good game of cards. He was a master griller, known for his “steak and foil pack” technique. Richard is survived by his daughters, Traci Barrett Irwin (Dan Irwin, Maggie, and Will Irwin) of Reston Virginia. Kelliann Barrett Miller (Dale Miller, Hannamae Miller) of Pawleys Island, South Carolina. The family will be celebrating the life of Richard (Dicky) Barrett at a future time and place. In lieu of flowers or donations, you can honor Richard best by playing a round of golf, sharing a beer with friends, or watching your favorite sports event. Life is too short - enjoy it while you can. |
