About | Phyllis Rojko Pearce was born on March 1, 1951 and died on September 17, 2022, after a six-year battle with cancer. Phyllis had a strong and enduring belief in God, and lived a life of faith, hope, and service. She graduated from McLean High School, and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the College of William and Mary. She was a gifted athlete and excelled in sports, particularly in field hockey and lacrosse. Phyllis dedicated her life to teaching special education students. Her teaching was so much more than a job; it was her mission and her vocation. For the past 32 years, she taught at Herndon High School, where she also coached the women’s field hockey team for many years. She achieved national board certification for her teaching in 2002 and maintained that certification up until her death. In her commencement speech to the 2022 graduating class of Herndon High School, Phyllis spoke about how faith, family, and community can support us through the difficult times of our lives and help us discover who we are meant to be. She said, “They can help you turn disappointment into opportunity and they will fight with you to turn despair into hope.” Phyllis met her husband, John, at a prayer group meeting. They shared a strong faith and enjoyed traveling, playing cards with friends, and attending sporting events together. Phyllis worked tirelessly to make our community a better place, and we will all miss her. She enriched the lives of her family, friends, colleagues, and the numerous students whom she taught or coached. She is survived by her husband, John Pearce, and five siblings (Jennifer Rojko, Connie Schmidt, Patty Mulreany, Cathy Banerjee Rojko, and Tony Rojko), and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 2:00 P. M. Friday, September 30, 2022 at St. Bridget of Ireland Catholic Church, Berryville with Father Paul. Grankauskas officiating. Burial will follow at Cool Spring Natural Cemetery, Berryville. |
