About Dennis Lee Baughan Obituary

Dennis Lee “Butch” Baughan
October 20, 1945 – March 16, 2025

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Dennis “Butch” Baughan, a devoted husband, father, teacher, coach, and mentor, who left us on March 16, 2025, at the age of 79. A lifelong educator and coach, Dennis dedicated his career to shaping young minds and guiding athletes at high schools across Northern Virginia. His unwavering passion for teaching, commitment to his students and community, and steadfast support for his players left an indelible mark on all who knew him.

Born on October 20, 1945, in Maryland, Dennis was the cherished son of the late Mary Catherine Malay and the late Samuel C. Baughan. Though he faced the profound loss of his mother as an infant, he was lovingly raised by his father, Samuel, and his devoted stepmother, Effie Baughan, who provided him with a nurturing home filled with love and support.

Dennis spent his early years helping his father at the family butcher shop in Herndon, VA, near Route 7 and Dranesville Road. A proud graduate of Herndon High School’s Class of 1964, he built lifelong friendships that remained close to his heart. Before pursuing a career in education, he worked as an electrician. He later attended Appalachian State University, earning a master’s degree in Industrial Arts. Football played a pivotal role in his early years, and he credited Coach Jim Ashwell with inspiring him both as a young man and later as a coach.

Dennis dedicated much of his life to coaching and mentoring young athletes. He coached wrestling and football at several schools, including Lake Braddock, where he had the privilege of working alongside his best friend and head coach, Rick Lewis. He later joined the coaching staff at Lee High School before becoming the head football coach at Edison High School. Eventually, he returned to Herndon High School as head coach, a position he held until 1991.

Beyond the field, Dennis was a passionate educator who continued teaching into the early 2000s. He often reflected fondly on his time in the classroom, frequently saying, “I’d give anything to wake up tomorrow and go back to teaching.” His dedication to his students and players left a lasting impact on countless lives.

Outside of his career, Dennis was a loving and supportive father who instilled integrity and hard work in his children. He was a natural teacher in all aspects of life, always ready with wisdom, guidance, and a steady hand when someone needed him. Whether solving a problem or offering encouragement, he was the person you could always count on.

Dennis will be deeply missed, but his legacy of mentorship, leadership, and love will live on in the countless lives he touched.

In addition to his parents, Dennis was preceded in death by his brother, Jerry Baughan, and his sister, Shirley, and her husband, Edwin Courtney.

Dennis is survived by his beloved wife, Linda Baughan; his children, Rob Lewis and Amanda Baughan; his grandchildren; and many cherished nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 25th from 10:00am to 11:00am at Adams-Green Funeral Home, 721 Elden Street, Herndon, VA, where funeral services will be held at 11:00 am. Graveside services will immediately follow at Chestnut Grove Cemetery, Herndon, VA.

Classmate Memories

Hi Roger Cole, my memory of him was when I was playing football for Herndon class of 75. I went off to the military and my favorite linebacker coach Rick Lewis on his dying bed Asked Rick to marry his wife and raise his son little Ricky Lewis. So when Rick died, Butch married his wife and braised little Ricky. I would sure love to get a hold of Rick. I believe he was a quarterback for Herndon and later years.. Butch was the head football coach at Herndon and my dad was his offensive line offensive coordinator for the Herndon hornets. I believe that was an 84 after Don Noel had the team.. If Ricky wants to reach me, my cell phone number is 703-362-6786 and I live in the Sterling area next to Herndon

I made a mistake. It was Butch not little Ricky that married his wife.
I was a classmate of Butch, Rick Sr., and Linda (Krornfeld) Lewis. I lost track of everyone after graduation when I went to college in Ohio. Butch came to my Dad's funeral in 1991 because he used play Little League Baseball in a league where my Dad had coached. Butch was simply a great guy and a genuinely good person. He leaves a lot of people better off for sharing his life with them. Butch mattered to everyone who knew him.
