About | William Boswell Hanes passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on February 24, 2023, in Leesburg, VA, at the age of 81. A memorial service will be held at the Loudoun Funeral Chapel on Sunday, March 5, with visitation at 2 pm and service following at 3 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations made be made to the American Cancer Society. He grew up in Herndon, Virginia, and graduated from Herndon High School in 1959. Bill went on to attend Hampden Sydney College, where he was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. He took a brief break from college and served in the Army from 1961-1963. He earned his B.S. from Hampden Sydney in 1965 and his J.D. from the University of Richmond Law School in 1968. During the 1970s, he practiced law with his father in Herndon at the law firm of Hanes & Hanes and was the Vice-Mayor and Councilman for the Town of Herndon from 1971-1975. He then moved to Leesburg and practiced law for many years with the law firm of Hanes, Sevila, Saunders & McCahill in Leesburg, founded in 1974. He was named Commissioner of Accounts for the Circuit Court of Loudoun County in 1980. In 2008, Bill started a law firm, Hanes & Dickerson, with his stepdaughter, Mindy, where he practiced until he retired in 2011. Bill was taught how to play golf by his father and was a golf enthusiast his entire life. In 1994 he became an active member of the Ten Bears Association, (TBA), a group of golfers who went on golf trips every spring to South Carolina. In the TBAi’ he formed many long-lasting friendships. In 2012, Bill and his wife Carol retired and moved to a beautiful home on the Great Wicomico River in Wicomico Church, VA. They joined the Indian Creek Yacht and Country Club, where he worked on his swing and enjoyed golf outings and summers at the River with his children and grandchildren. Bill was a beloved and well-known member of his community and was a loyal friend, brother, husband, and father. He had a larger-than-life personality and was outspoken yet kindhearted and generous. Bill adored his family and enjoyed playing golf, watching sports, especially football, and golf, listening to country music, and playing Boggle with his grandchildren. Bill came from a musical family and played the saxophone and guitar. He was also known for his sense of humor and encouragement always to be self-confident and pursue your goals. His favorite saying was, “You’re the best.” Bill, we think you are the best and will be dearly missed. Bill is predeceased by his wife, Carol Crouch Hanes, who passed away on February 13 in Leesburg, VA. His parents and brother, Thom Hanes, of Herndon, VA, also predeceased him. He is survived by his twin brother Robert Hanes; his daughters Cary Lee Hanes, Cameron Hanes, and Melinda Harman; his niece Ashley Hanes, his nephews Chris Hanes and Dana Hanes; and his grandchildren, Carter Gibson-Hanes, Gracie Gibson-Hanes, Gray Hetzel, Beckham (Becks) Hetzel, Jack Hartman, and Charlotte Hartman.
