DORA JEAN FLEMING
Former Postmaster and longtime Herlong resident Dora Jean Fleming peacefully passed from this life with her loving daughter at her side, early Wednesday morning, Aug. 27, 2008 at her residence in Herlong.
A native of Alva, Okla., born 83 years ago on June 26, 1925 to the late Lester and Lulu (Morreson) Booze, at the age of 8 she and her family relocated to the Northern California valley community of Chico. Dora went on to attend Chico High School.

Dora met and later married the love of her life, the late John Jay Fleming, on March 24, 1941 in Reno, Nev., and the newlyweds shortly thereafter moved to Herlong in 1943. Her first priority in life was that of a loving wife and mother who worked hard to always keep her family first. Her professional life consisted of 23 years of loyal and dedicated service to the Postal Service. She was named the Postmaster for the Herlong Post Office in 1980.

Dora and her family attended the former Herlong Base Chapel Church. She had a deep commitment to the Order of Eastern Star with membership in the Sierra Star Chapter #129 of Sierraville, Calif., and the Five Star Chapter #51 of Susanville, Calif. She is a Past Worthy Matron as well as a Deputy Grand Matron to Indiana in California.

Dora just recently relinquished the duties of President of the Daughters of the Nile due to her health complications and again just recently was honored with her 50-year membership pin with the Order of Eastern Star.

Accomplished in all types of crafts, she enjoyed volunteering at the local blood bank as well as helping as a poll worker and registering voters.

In passing, Dora leaves her son; Dennis Ray Fleming and wife Linda, of Gardnerville, Nev., daughter; Kathleen Little and husband Ray, of Council Bluff, Iowa, sister; Ida Griffith, of Chico, Calif., and the glow in Dora's eyes: her grandchildren; Dennis Ramon Fleming, Ron Westman and Gina Glass, along with six precious great-grandchildren.
Dora joins in her eternal home her loving husband John who passed from this life in 1984, grandson; Alan Steven Fleming, four brothers and one sister.

Following cremation locally at Fehrman Crematory, at Dora's request private family scattering services will take place on their Eagle Lake property. An opportunity to express your condolences to the family along with signing the memorial guest register is available online at fehrmanmortuary.com. Dwendle "Roy" Dale Fennel was born in Oklahoma December 23, 1941 to Oscar and Opal Fennel of Oklahoma. He went home April 21, 2015 surrounded by his loving family. Roy attended Herlong High School and was cast in the movie "Guns of the timberland" along with his only sister Wanda Jean (Fennel) Russell and brother in-law Ray Russell, released in 1960 by Alan Ladd. Roy was a Fire Crew Foreman for BLM, Roy put up fencing along the Frenchman Lake road by Chilcoot Ca., after "Roy's" career change to Sierra Army Depot in Herlong where he retired. Roy started and owned the business Valley Pump and Supply in Doyle Ca.
"Roy" never new a stranger he was a kind and loving man, willing to help anyone. But don't cross him! "Roy" and his only brother Don, did as all brother's would raced cars motorcycles and chased wild women, unimaginable right! Roy's best friend when he was about 9 and through adulthood Michael (Butch) Harrison and Hoppy one of Roy's best friends of over thirty five years stated "Roy" was the finest man he ever knew. "Roy" with love and honor courageously cared for his aging Father Oscar. Roy endured the horrible fire in 2003 of the family home he had built. "Roy" then moved to his Father & Mother's family home located 445-685 Hwy. 395 Milford, Ca. 96131. "Roy's" smile would light up the room when he walked in, his laughter contagious, and his beautiful crystal blue eyes filled with love always shined. "Roy's" favorite place to visit "of course the ocean in Bandon" favorite tree blue spruce, favorite color blue. During the spring and summer "Roy" loved to lay on the lawn with a cool summer breeze looking up at the big beautiful sky morning or night. "Roy" was a loving Dad and taught all three of his children the value of a dollar and anyone else that would listen. Roy would joke about how he had given his three children a full size Train in the back yard! Roy loved to camp, water ski and enjoy life to the fullest. Some of "Roy's" favorite foods;
Fried chicken, fried potatoes with onion, thick slice of onion and salt of course at almost every meal, french fries covered in gravy, along with a big juicey cheeseburger, all the seafood he could eat, ice cold seedless watermelon, and milk shake of course would always be Rocky-Road ice cream smothered with salted peanuts just to name a few!
Roy is survived by his ex-wife Donna (Cook) Bryant of 34 years.

Edith Lee (Ortega) Perez was born Aug. 30, 1930, in Ozark County, Mo., on a farm to Carl and Thelma Stevens. She was lifted up on angel’s wings into heaven on March 15, 2008, with family by her side.

After graduating, from Lassen High School in Susanville, Calif., she began her career at the Sierra Army Depot where she worked for more than 40 years. It was there she met and then married Max Ortega and had two children, Kathy Bristow (Bob Coutnier), of Elk Grove, and Jon Ortega (Lori), of Herlong. She enjoyed being grandma to Amy Williams (Ken), Lee Anne Ortega (Billy Olivas), Rachele Bristow, Matt Ortega, and Erin Bristow. She cherished the time spent in Elk Grove, Calif., visiting with her great-grandsons Kenny Jr. and Korey Williams. She is also survived by her brother Lyle Stevens, of Redwater, Tex., his children Mark and Linda as well as many cousins.

Edith shared her fabulous cooking, crocheted blankets and knitted slippers unselfishly with her family and friends. She was always there to mend her grandchildren’s broken hearts and torn clothes or help with a new recipe or cooking disaster. Her family will miss her unconditional love for them.

Family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of her life to be held at 11 a.m., on Saturday, March 29, 2008., in the Family Resource Center (The Post Chapel), 170 D.S. Hall, Herlong, Calif.

Bad News-Edwin T. Young Sr.
Long-term Susanville resident Edwin T. Young Sr. passed from his life peacefully with his family by his side, Thursday, June 14, 2018, in Reno Nevada.
Edwin was born in Fashion, Georgia to Roy and Callie Young on Sept. 29, 1925. Edwin served his country honorably as a member of the U.S. Navy in WW II as part of the Invasion of Sicily in 1943 and the Normandy Invasion in 1944.
Edwin married Drusilla Strickland in Georgia on Aug. 11, 1943, and settled in Milford, California in 1947. After the death of his first wife, Edwin moved his family to Susanville, in 1962, and married Mary Lou Marsters on Feb. 2, 1963. Edwin raised seven children, four boys and three girls. Edwin was employed with Sierra Army Deport in Herlong, California until his retirement in 1974. He was an avid outdoors man and loved fishing, hunting, and camping. Edwin spent much of his retirement at Eagle Lake.
He was preceded in death by two children, Edwin T. Young Jr. and Phyllis Lowery.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary Lou Young, of Susanville; his brother, Weldon, of Herlong; sons, Terry, of Fouke, Arizona, Roger, of Red Springs, North Carolina, and Kendal, of Placerville, California; daughters, Patty Anderson, of Yuma, Arizona, and Cary Cole, of Baytown, Texas; 12 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Gena Marie Forsberg, 92, passed away at a Reno care facility on June 23, 2008. She was born January 17, 1916 in Eureka, WI to Erick and Eleanor (Andrewson) Forsberg. Gena was a Reno area resident for more than 30 years coming from Herlong, where she worked for many years as a finance officer in the U.S. Army.

Gena was never married but enjoyed companionship with her soul mate, Bud Deaton. Bud passed away in 2000. She is also predeceased by her sister and six brothers. She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Gena was laid to rest privately at Mountain View Cemetery, Reno. Walton Funeral Home, Reno was entrusted with arrangements.

Gerald V. McIntire passed away on May 29, 2008 in Placerville,
California. He was born on October 27, 1910 to Harvey and Alice
McIntire In Boise, Idaho.

He was preceed in death by his wife of 62 years, Grace McIntire,
infant son Michael Vance McIntire, sisters Bonnie Schrader, Eleanor
Clark and brother Leo McIntire.

Mr. McIntire is survived by sons John, Chuck, Jim and Patrick
McIntire, 16 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and 2 great-great
grandchildren.

Mr. McIntire served his country during World War II as an enlisted
man in the Army and was assigned to duty in the China-Burma Theater
of Operations where he served with a laison unit training Chinese
troops in their war against Japan.

After the war, he was employeed in Civil Service at Herlong,
California's Sierra Ordinance Depot. He spent the last 10 years as a
Nuclear Special Weapons Technician for the Army traveling to many
countries as an instructor and consultant on Special Weapons. After
over 30 years in civial service he retited with Grace to Placerville,
Californiato enjoy his retirement years.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 28th, 2008, 1:00 PM
at Lake Oaks Mobile Home Community Club House at 4280 Patterson

You don't know me, but I am the wife of Glenn Ray Moore, class of 1956. I just wanted to let you know that Glenn passed away on Jan. 31, 2010. He suffered a stroke last August that left him 100% disabled and went downhill from there. He talked a lot about Herlong. It was a good time in his life. Thank you for listening. Maybe you can pass this along and let others know that might have known him. Thank you again!

IRENE ZADA RIPLEY WEST MARSTERS
Irene Zada Ripley West Marsters was born at the Dalles, Ore., to Clarence Edward Ripley and Laura Spence Ripley. She was the second daughter, the first being Bertha Ripley born in 1926. They lived out of Missoula, Mont. where their parents ran a fish hatchery for the government during World War 1 and II, providing fish for the troops.

She married Billy M. West on March 11, 1944, when she was 15 1/2 years old. She and Billy West had four children: Billy M. West born in Herlong, Calif., on March 28, 1946 and died in Jan. 1971; Dixie May West, born in 1947, prematurely; and Malinda West, born in Herlong, Calif., on Nov. 16, 1948 and only living daughter; Jon E West, born in Herlong, Calif., on Sept. 16, 1952, who lives in Queens Creek, Ariz., with his wife Roberta West (Bobbie).

Irene first went to work for Sierra Army Depot in 1945. Then Billy West who was a Fish and Game Warden for Lassen County moved to Manhattan, Nev., for about six months before moving back to Herlong where his mother Florence West taught atthe Teen Center at Sierra Army Depot from 1944 to 1954. Billy West died in March 1964 and Irene married Hugh Marsters for two years then split on friendly terms.

She started out as a dental assistant at Sierra Army Hospital Herlong and worked her way up the ladder 40 years later to retire in 1989 as a freight classification specialist supervisor.

She loved life, her family and friends.

We always had horses, cats, dogs, etc. and she went to many horse shows, parades, belonging to the Honey Lake Valley Riders for many years as did the rest of the family.

She always had a kind word and big hug for everyone and will be greatly missed by all. Any donations may go to the Cancer Society Senior Service or donation of your choice.

She was 79 and lived a full life and will be missed by all who knew her.

Jim Barnett died peacefully at his home in Milford, CA at the age of 74 from complications of rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. He was born in 1943 in Torrance, California.
His childhood was spent in Herlong and Reno and Sacramento, where he married his first wife, and where his daughter Jeanette was born. He moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1965 to work at United Airlines in various positions. He was very active in the Machinists Union (IAMAW) and appreciated the benefits and working conditions. He earned his BA & Master’s Degree in Psychology from San Jose University while working at UAL, and became adjunct faculty at DeAnza Community College, teaching Psychology in the evenings. Jim retired from UAL in 1998 and returned to Lassen County in 2000, and immediately became adjunct faculty at Lassen Community College, again teaching Psychology. He enjoyed teaching his students very much. He also enjoyed playing Texas Hold-Em tournaments and slot machines, and making furniture in his “shop” at his home in Milford.
Jim married his beloved spouse Judy and they had 32 wonderful years together in La Honda in the Santa Cruz Mountains and in Lassen County. He is survived by his beloved spouse Judy Macho Barnett, daughter Jeanette Kjosa (David), grandchildren Dan & Nicole of Tampa, Florida, and is related to many families in Lassen County including the Wiles, Sineriuses, Joys, and Bayleses. He joked about sitting in Walker’s Café and watching all the cousins drive by.
Jim requested no services. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Jane Elizabeth Stady (Goode), 87, a long-time resident of Herlong, was surrounded by family at the time of her passing on Saturday, July 18, 2015 in Reno.
Jane was born in the town of Arling, Idaho on April 28, 1928. On July 4, 1946 she moved from Renton, Washington, to Herlong. Jane met the love of her life, Roger Stady, and they were united in marriage May 10, 1959, and through their union they were joined together with her three children and his two children.
She worked at the Herlong Primary School for more than 40 years and was the business manager at the time of her retirement. She enjoyed participating in the annual school Halloween parade, often dressing up as the “school clown” and leading the parade.
After retirement she volunteered at the local library and faithfully attended the monthly retired ladies luncheon that she enjoyed so much. She also liked giving to several animal charities; one in particular was the Animal Ark in Reno. Some of her hobbies were caring for her yard, feeding the birds and enjoying time with family and friends.
Jane was preceded in death by her husband, Roger; father, George; mother, Eva; her sister, Joyce; son, Roger Jr.; and great-grandson, Travis.
Survivors include her daughters, Marsha and her husband, Don, and Debra and her husband, Jeff; her sons, Michael; and Kelly and his wife, Paula; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and sisters, Jewel and Joanne.
Donations may be made to an animal charity of your choice. The family plans a celebration of Jane’s life at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, 2015. The potluck luncheon will be held at the Milford Community Association (MCA).

Dick was born on February 5, 1926 in Cleveland, Ohio to Joseph Leslie and Florence GrohsUptegrove. He moved to Lassen County with is mother and brother as a young boy and attended elementary school in Westwood and Susanville. He was a proud member and graduate of the Lassen High School Class of 1944. After high school, he entered the Army Air Corps serving at the end of World War II. He returned to Susanville after the war and obtained his AA degree from Lassen Community College, attended San Jose State University and the University of California, Berkeley, and obtained his Juris Doctorate degree from the University of San Francisco in 1954. He took a job as a law clerk in Reno, NV but later returned to Susanville to take a position as the Lassen County Assistant Director of Public Works where he worked until his retirement in 1988. He also taught Business Law at Lassen Community College and the California Correctional Center and served as the Lassen County Director of Civil Defense for the State of California. Upon his retirement, Dick obtained his pilots license and built and flew his prized Kit Fox aircraft. He was a member of the Susanville Chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association, and the American Legion.
Dick contributed to both the history and development of Lassen County. As a teen, he helped build the Herlong Army Depot, and the Herlong Access Road and worked at Camp 10 surveying the routes for the railroad lines. While working for Lassen County, he was instrumental in developing the Eagle Lake Road (A1) between Susanville and Eagle Lake.He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing and spending summers at his cabin at Eagle Lake (Eagles Nest), which he built in 1959.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother James L Uptegrove. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Phyllis JoAnn Uptegrove of Susanville, CA; son James (Mavrey) Uptegrove of Susanville, CA; daughter Janet (Sam) Porter of Susanville, CA; daughter Joan (Ed) Brehmof Encinitas, CA; three nieces, one nephew, nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Lassen High School Alumni Association. Services for Dick Uptegrove will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2020 at 11:00 AM at Waltons Colonial Mortuary in Susanville, CA, with a luncheon to follow at the Monticola Club.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Phyllis JoAnn Uptegrove of Susanville, CA; son James (Mavrey) Uptegrove of Susanville, CA; daughter Janet (Sam) Porter of Susanville, CA; daughter Joan (Ed) Brehmof Encinitas, CA; three nieces, one nephew, nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Lassen High School Alumni Association. Services for Dick Uptegrove will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2020 at 11:00 AM at Waltons Colonial Mortuary in Susanville, CA, with a luncheon to follow at the Monticola Club.
