Ann Packer

Ann Packer

Class of 1977

Many classmates and Palo Alto friends loved Ann's first, best-selling novel, The Dive from Clausen's Pier, as well as her follow-up success, Songs Without Words. Look for Ann's newest book, Swim Back To Me, in April, 2011.

After graduating from Gunn, Ann did her undergraduate years at Yale University. Following a stint in the New York publishing industry, Ann attended the Iowa Writer's Workshop from 1986 to 1988, selling her first short story to The New Yorker a few weeks before receiving her M.F.A. degree.

Ann was born and raised at Stanford and lives on the Peninsula. Her mom, Nancy Packer, was a student of Wallace Stegner's at the Stanford Writing program and she later joined the faculty. Her dad, Herbert Packer, was on the Stanford Law School faculty. Her brother, George Packer, writes for The New Yorker.
