STAFF/FACULTY HALL OF FAME 2010

Class of 0

The late U.S. Sen. Millard E. Tydings leads the first class of six people selected for induction into the newly-formed Havre de Grace High School Hall of Fame. Joining Sen. Tydings, an influential national political figure for almost four decades in the first half of the 20th century, are current Harford County Executive David Craig, the late HHS teacher and football coach Jim Harris, the late senior citizen advocate Roy MentZer and two men who didn’t actually graduate from HHS because their color barred them from attending, the late Dr. George Stansbury and Dr. Irving Williams.

Dr. Williams and Dr. Stansbury were graduates of the old Havre de Grace Colored High School during the era of strict racial segregation in Harford County public schools that existed from the late 19th century until 1964. Rick Hauf, the current HHS band director who chairs the hall of fame selection committee, said members from the panel decided from the outset that they would consider outstanding graduates of Havre de Grace Colored High School and its successor, Havre de Grace Consolidated, if the person lived in the Greater Havre de Grace community at the time.
