Class of 1987
Morrell began his amateur boxing career in an unorthodox but familiar way to many fighters, in what is known as "backyard boxing." After being urged on by friends, he went to the local gym and began training while learning the sport's rules and regulations. Morrell compiled an impressive amateur record including district, state and national titles along with an acceptance to the Olympic Training Center in Northern Michigan. He fought many of the top amateur boxers in Michigan and the five-state region.
By the time he turned Professional, Morrell had already sparred some of the top Amateur and Professional Fighters in the Detroit area, including Future IBF Featherweight Champion , future WBC Super Bantamweight Champion and worked with top trainers in the famed Kronk boxing Gym in Detroit, Morrell began his professional career on 06/27/90 at The Hyatt Regency in Dearborn Michigan against Steve Thomas also in his professional debut, This was Morrell's first and only professional boxing match...Shortly after offers came, Morrell and his manager Paul Soucie split...until the 3 year contract Morrell had with Soucie expired, he (Morrell) was unable to fight any sanctioned fights, so while he continued Gym to Gym to keep in touch, he returned to what was comfortable to him, Backyard Boxing...Morrell is currently living and training comfortably with CHRIST in his life in Central Florida...
