Gary Lee Dobbins
Class of 1966
I submit Gary Lee Dobbins, to be considered among the Distinguished Alumni.
Gary and I were friends, we served together in the 25th Infantry Division in Viet Nam. Gary and 16 other brave men from Charlie Co. 1/5 Mech, were KIA on August 21, 1968. We only knew each other for a short time, but during those few weeks, I got to see and know what a great guy he was. I was wounded two days before and on the night of the 20th, Gary came to see how I was doing. We had a long talk, late into the night. Gary told me that on the next day he was going to be the RTO (carry the radio) for the Company Commander. He told me he was worried about not being able to do a good job, worried about possibly letting down the unit. I told him that he was the right man for the job.
Gary didn't get the chance to amass a fortune or become a leader in industry or become a great husband or father, but I know he could have. So when you consider who to honor as Distinguished Alumni, Gary should be right up there at the top of your list. Gary distinguished himself on the battlefield with honor and courage. The men of Charlie Co. 1/5 Mech know this and Gary will never be forgotten. Rest in Peace my friend.
