School
Russ liked Math and Science in High School. He worked as a wrestling coach assistant, a tumbling team member, Stage Crew member, Science Club member, and JV Football defensive player. Russ worked for the Virginian Pilot as a morning news carrier to earn spending money. He had over 250 customers. His route extended from Hampton Boulevard Bridge at the Lafayette River, to West Little Creak Road in Norfolk, Virginia. Several of his classmates were from families of his customers. After School Russ worked in the Radio and TV Repair business at MasterCraft Inc. MasterCraft was located at 1202 West Little Creek Road in a building which he also helped build from scratch. Including making by hand each cement/cinder block used in the building. His father built a manual cement/cinder block making machine and Russ made over 2,000 cement blocks using that machine.
Russ recalls getting up at 4:30 AM every morning for 364 days a year, for 4 years, to get the newspapers delivered by 7:30 AM, in order to get to school by 8:00AM. The afternoons were taken up with trying to collect the 40 cents per week from the Virginian Pilot customers. You would not believe how many customers claimed not to have the 40 cents and would have him come back 3 or 4 times for his weekly pay. This significantly limited his social and night life. Russ earned enough money to buy his first car. A 1936 Plymouth that he painted metallic Blue with a Chinese Red stripe down the side. The paint store had a sale on unclaimed paint. I remember many teachers at Granby High School. I took typing from Mrs. Fanny Thomas. She told me that if I promised not to make a carrier in typing she would pass me, since I was docked 10 words for every spelling or typing mistake. I reached 120 words per minute, but the course required 160 words per minute to pass. I could get 180 words per minute but my typing errors and spelling errors would always knock me back down to the 120 word per minute rate. I enjoyed Mrs. Adams math class and did very well in math. Mrs. Brock and Mrs. Boggs were teaching Science and Biology. I did OK except for spelling of names. I still have trouble with spelling and grammar. Miss Knight, my English teacher tried her best, but I was a lost cause. Billy Martin, the wrestling Coach, wanted Russ/Gene to quit his jobs and spend full time Wrestling, but the family business could not spare him the time off. Russ did learn the building trade and electronic TV and Radio, communications trade which has helped him significantly during his Electrical Engineering carrier.
Russ joined the United States Marine Reserve, while he was in High School in 1953. He did this to serve the Required Military Obligation and to train with the best. [Semper Fi]. He was the first Six month USMC Reservist to go through Parris Island Boot Camp.
He stayed in the USMC until 1966 training Marines in Electronics, and other Military skills. He gained over 10,000 hours of in class training, (6 years) of technical and Military classes. He left the USMC(R) when he became a Registered Professional Engineer and when he worked as a plant manager at Compton Industries in Vestal, N.Y. He built a Federal Aviation Authority [FAA] metrology Laboratory and Calibration Center. He then had to leave town to build Calibration and Certification centers in Raleigh, NC and Cherry Hill, NJ.

POSIX: reveling in its popularity
Looking to save money and reuse software, Pentagon planners are turning to POSIX. The U.S. Navy's Open Architecture Computing Environment is driving the move to inter operable systems. If all real-time operating systems (RTOSs) work with POSIX, then soldiers can swap code from a broken computer to a new one.

Military
Russ Theisen joined the USMC (R) in 1953. He was assigned to VMA-233 Marine Air Attack Squadron they were flying F4U Corsairs. Later the VMA-233 Squadron flew AD-5, F2H-2 Banshees, F7U Cutlass, A4D Sky Hawks. Russ was in Avionics, the Aircraft Electronics. He was among the first 6-Month Marine Reservist selected to go through USMC Parris Island training. While at Parris Island, the Marine Corps Drill Instructor creed was written after six Marine recruits were drowned while crossing the swamp with full gear on their backs. Russ took advantage of the schooling available to the military. He has attended some [32] Military schools in the Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and CBs and Military Depot Maintenance Centers. He spent over [13] years on one single enlistment, by extending his enlistment by the duration of each school he attended. The USMC administration did not know how to handle this - one, of a kind situation. No one had ever spent 13 years on a single enlistment. The enlistment was supposed to be only for 8 years, but he was required to extend for the duration of each school he attended. He took advantage of the Marine Corps training and received over 10,000 hours (6 man years) of schooling during this time. He was shot twice, while pulling target butts, 1st at rifle Ranges in Parris Island, and then at Dam Neck, VA. (It did not pay for Russ Theisen to be anywhere people were shooting weapons). However, He did shoot expert at the rifle range and Expert with the Colt 45 pistol. He did not get a Purple Heart medal for being shot. Nor, for the accident when he ejected from a T-33, or (T2V Navy version), jet aircraft and injured his back. Nor for dislocating his knee on the leading edge of the wing of an F2H aircraft during flight operations. The Marine Corps Drill Instructors creed was written while Russ Theisen was at Parris Island. It seems that Senior Drill Instructor Staff Sergent John McKeon was taking his recruits through the swamps and [6] recruits drowned in the water and mud. Russ had been through the same swamps, several weeks earlier. Of the 174 recruits that started the 17 week training with Russ, Only 58 of the original group graduated with him in Platoon 15 in 1956. The rest were sent back to repeat the training, or dropped from the Corps for various reasons. Russ was training over (2,000) reservists in Guerrilla warfare, Nuclear, Biological and Chemical and Riot control in Binghamton, New York, when he completed his USMC service in 1966. The training that Russ received helped him develop into a skilled and productive citizen.
Russ went on to help build more than 30 Defense related systems for the U S Government. Many were, and are being used in IRAQ.

The most significant development in the next 15 years, will be the nano technology. Here, the chemistry, nano-robotics, nano-medicine, and nano-electronics will be combined to make the most astounding break troughs in every field. Today you can not imagine what it will be like.
