Defense Link Information: Living with the Face of The Enemy

Chung was drafted, and enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1970. He was stationed at various bases stateside until leaving the 49th Tactical Fighter Wing, Holloman Air Force Base New Mexico for Vietnam early 1972. Chung arrived as a replacement at Tan Son Nhut Air Base, Saigon, and was immediatly detailed to the 377th Combat Support Group, Bien at Hoa Air Base, and then An Loc in Tay Nin Province during Easter Offensive of 1972. Chung was detailed to VNAF Air Crews on C-7 Caribous conducting resupply, air support and medical evacuation missions in and out of An Loc. After the Seige at An Loc, he was evacuated to Travis Air Force Base California. Chung was reassigned to Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada in 1973. Chung was disischarged with the rank of SGT from the Air Force Reserves in 1976.
There were only 61,000 Americans left in Vietnam during the 1972 Easter Offensive. Over 300,000 Communist North Vietnamese Army Regulars including Mechanized poured down on the remaining U.S Soldiers, Airman, Sailors and Marines. The 377th Combat Support Group was one of many units during the 1972 Easter Offensive awarded the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry and Presidential Unit Citatation. The names of those that did not make it home from the 1972 Easter Offensive, (America's last battle in Vietnam) are on the last two panels of the Vietnam Veterans Memeorial (The Wall) in Washington, DC.

I attend Glenbrook HS for 9th and 10th grades. Was a Navy Brat at NAS Glenview and relocated to New Orleans after the Sophomore year. Know as "Buddy" to many at Glenbrook HS. Served four years in the Naval Air Reserve and another 24 years in the Regular Air Force as an air traffic control and communications officer. Still serve as AF Academy Admissions Liaision Officer.

As an Air Force Lieutenant I was an aircraft maintenance officer, followed by Education with Industry and then five years as a rocket scientist, project manager for the FB-11B/C, and F101 turbine engines for the B-1 aircraft. After a tour as an executive officer and a year at the National War College, I transitioned to become the Program Director for two lmulti-billion dollar programs (Joint STARS and WIS) followed by another Command job of DCS for Personnel at Andrews AFB and retired as a Colonel at Andrews AFB. I joined industry and was an executive for several large and small businesses. After some time off I joined the Government Civilian workforce as a project manager at Hanscom AFB outside Boston where my wife, Dawn, and I live in Westford, MA close to our two boys who also work in the Defense industry. I stay in touch with a couple Glenbrook classmates - Come visit us - we have the room!

Deputy Commander for Operations Group and Support Group at Andrews AFB, MD. Vice Commander of Dover AFB, DE. AFROTC Detachment Commander at University of Illinois.
Retired in 2001 after 30+ years of service.

Commissioned as a 2LT out of college ROTC. Completed flight school and assigned as an F-4C/D/E pilot flying over 200 combat sorties out of DaNang Airbase, RVN from 1971 to 1972. Amassed over 3700 hours of flight time in the F-4, T-38, and A-10 aircraft. Served a two year tour of duty at the Pentagon and was a fighter Squadron Commander and Wing Commander before retiring as Numbered Air Force Asst. Director of Operations.
