About Alice Marie Steindam, passed away May 30, 2011, surrounded by her family at the Genoa Care Center, where she received such loving care for the last 20 months of her life. Alice grew up in Genoa. She was born to Louis and Mabel (Swartz) Hoodlebrink on August 18, 1927, and went to Genoa Schools, graduating in 1947. She married Bernard "Barney" Steindam May 7, 1949, and he preceded her in death August 22, 1983. Two children blessed this marriage, Harold (Jenny) Steindam and Shirley (Michael) Poddany. Alice is also survived by grandchildren, Nevin Steindam (fiancée Alicia Delvaux), Caleb Steindam, Darci (Michael) Sennett and Sara Steindam, great grandson, Russell Kohl Sennett and many special nieces and nephews, including a special relationship with her niece, Karen Cooley. She is also survived by sisters-in-law, Monica Steindam and Margaret Steindam. Alice was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother and sister-in-law, Orville and Norma Hoodlebrink, infant brothers, Irvin, Elmer and Marlin Hoodlebrink, brothers and sisters-in-law, Karl and Angela Steindam, Junior and Laverne Steindam, and brothers-in-law, Wilber Steindam and Norman Steindam. Alice kept herself busy from the time she was young, working at Hirzel's Canning for three years. When her son Harold was old enough she became a Den Mother for Pack 310. Everyone wanted to be in her den because of the cool wood projects they made! When her daughter Shirley was born—no time for Girl Scouts—Shirley was upset that she couldn't be a Cub Scout! Alice remained in scouting for over 20 years and received the Silver Beaver Award, the highest honor given to scouting volunteers. Alice also drove school bus for Genoa for ten years. She also loved making and selling wooden toys that helped kids use their imaginations. For over 20 years Alice was in charge of the finances of the Annual Chicken Dinner at St. John's United Church of Christ in Genoa. She also always had a woodcraft for the St. John's UCC Vacation Bible School every summer for many years, and for the Sunday School, she made an exact replica of King Herod's Temple. Alice then joined Solomon Lutheran Church in Woodville, where she was a member of the Naomi Circle and the Bible Study groups and had a great time with the Solomon's Kitchen Cutie Band. In her spare time Alice made models of all the schools in the Genoa School district. Afterward she was honored by the school board for her talents. Another of Alice's passions was playing keyboard while her brother, Orville, played violin. Together they played at fairs, senior centers and small get-togethers. Several times Alice played at the Raceway Park to entertain during races! Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. Thursday, June 2, 2011, at the Robinson-Walker Funeral Home & Crematory, 501 West St., Genoa. The funeral service will be conducted 11:00 a.m., Friday, June 3, 2011, in Solomon Lutheran Church, 305 W. Main St., Woodville; Pastor Bill Duty officiating. Interment will follow in Clay Township Cemetery, Genoa. Memorials for Alice may be directed to Solomon Lutheran Church, Hospice of Northwest Ohio, or the donor's choice.
