About Me	After graduation from Garinger, I attended UNC-Charlotte where I obtained a BS in Chemistry and a BA in Political Science in 1973. In 1978, I obtained a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. My entire professional career has been in chemistry and mostly in Illinois. From 2008 to 2026 (now retired), I worked for Orochem Technologies in Naperville, IL, where I was a Research Fellow and Director of Chemistry. My expertise is in organic synthesis, liquid chromatography, chiral separations, and polymer science. Over the years I have had several inventions (55 US patents), publications in professional journals, and professional presentations. I always preferred working in the laboratory (hands on) to desk work. Keeping up with the latest science is refreshing. I guess that my Geek Ratio is pretty high, but it has been fun and rewarding. A brief summary of my career can be found on LinkedIn. Remember: Old chemists never die, they just fail to react. In 1976, I married Cynthia, an Illinois girl and also a trained scientist. Fortunately, Cindy is a tolerant woman, and we are still married. Appropriately, we first met in a chemistry lab (yes, there was chemistry between us). We have three grown children; two daughters and a son. In my spare time and when I am not trying to maintain the house, car, or whatever, I like to play guitar and banjo and sing folk music and bluegrass. I also volunteer at a cat rescue facility. I'm a backyard farmer and grow grapes (grape juice only), blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, apples, and bush cherries. As expected, I like to design and build devices to facilitate crop production and protect the produce from critters. It gets geekier, I also keep a history of crop production, and I make plots of the yields. Who knows, one day I might be able to use six sigma to increase yields.
