About	William “Bill” Griffith William “Bill” Griffith, a longtime San Diego television broadcaster who most recently made his home in Yuma, Arizona, passed away unexpectedly from a medical event on July 17. He was 77 years old. Born in South Carolina, Bill served his country in the United States Army before beginning a broadcasting career that would eventually bring him to San Diego and make him a familiar presence in homes throughout the region. Bill joined KGTV Channel 10 in February 1976 at the age of 27. During nearly four decades at the station, he served in almost every major on-air capacity, including weekend news anchor, sports director, talk-show host, magazine-show host, consumer reporter, and morning and midday news anchor. Beginning in 1996, he co-anchored KGTV’s morning and 11 a.m. newscasts. By the time of his retirement in 2015, after almost 40 years at KGTV, Bill had become one of the most recognizable and enduring figures in San Diego television news. Known by many as the “dean” of San Diego television, he spent his career informing viewers with professionalism, warmth, and a distinctive on-air presence. Bill’s work was recognized with multiple Emmy and Golden Mike awards, as well as the San Diego Press Club’s Drew Silvern Award, honoring courage in journalism and a commitment to ethics, fairness, and truth. He received the Silvern Award after publicly chronicling his six-month battle with male breast cancer in 2004. Through an online journal, Bill candidly shared his experiences with diagnosis, surgery, chemotherapy, and recovery. His story reached tens of thousands of readers around the world and allowed him to encourage others confronting cancer and other difficult circumstances. Following his recovery, Bill devoted time and energy to supporting cancer patients and organizations throughout Southern California. His community involvement included work with the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, the Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego, City of Hope, and programs supporting children with cancer and leukemia. He was also invited to speak at churches and cancer organizations throughout the region. Away from the television studio, Bill enjoyed golfing, water skiing, spending time with his family, participating in the life of his church, and caring for the family’s dogs. His Christian faith was an important part of his life and sustained him through some of its most difficult seasons. Bill is survived by his sons, Adam Griffiths, his wife Sara, and James Griffiths, his wife Rachel, and by his grandchildren, William Griffiths, Addison Griffiths, Caleb Griffiths, and Andrew Griffiths, as well as his former spouse, Jenny Griffiths, and his brother Jim Griffiths and sister Debbie Griffiths. He will also be remembered by extended family members, friends, former colleagues, and generations of San Diegans who welcomed him into their homes for nearly four decades.
